On the 20th anniversary of the deadliest terror attack in the U.S., former President George W. Bush warned of danger from domestic terrorists, delighting Democrats and infuriating supporters of former President Donald Trump.
"We have seen growing evidence that the dangers to our country can come, not only across borders, but from violence that gathers within," Bush said in a speech marking the anniversary at the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
"There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home," he said. "But in their disdain for pluralism, in their disregard for human life, in their determination to defile national symbols, they are children of the same foul spirit."
"And it is our continuing duty to confront them," Bush added.
Bush's veiled remarks came eight months after violent rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6 in an effort to disrupt Congress certifying President Joe Biden's election win, and just days after Attorney General Merrick Garland warned that the threat from homegrown violent extremist groups, particularly white supremacists, has grown to a level "higher than it ever was."
Democrats and other critics of Trump quickly praised the former Republican president's apparent linking of January 6 to September 11.
"George W. Bush is right—we must always remain vigilant against terrorist extremists both at home and abroad. And we cannot rest until all of Trump's traitorous, insurrectionist foot soldiers face justice," tweeted the Democratic coalition.
Keith Olbermann, a former MSNBC anchor who was suspended from the network in 2010 for making political contributions, tweeted: "Even George W. Bush now recognizes Trump, his supporters and those who directly participated in the 1/6 Coup attempt are terrorists—surely as the 9/11 ones were. I'll say it again: Trump damaged America in a way Bin Laden only dreamed of."
Meanwhile, Trump supporters and far-right figures vehemently condemned Bush's remarks online.
Former Senate candidate and longtime Republican Rob Maness tweeted, "I have personally overlooked many things from former President George W. Bush but his comparison between Trump voters and the Jihadists from 9/11 is an absolute disgrace."
"George Bush has been a skid mark on this nation for some time. And remains so," tweeted conservative commentator Jesse Kelly, who ran for the House in 2012 to represent Arizona.
Orchestrated by al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, the September 11 terror attacks killed nearly 3,000 people after two hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, one into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a fourth into a field in rural Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Four people died in the insurrection, three of natural causes and one shot dead by police. Among the officers who responded to the riot, one Capitol police officer died the following day after he was attacked by rioters and four others who defended the building later took their own lives.
Both January 6 and September 11 have been described as attacks on American Democracy and way of life, including by Biden.
Bush has previously been outspoken about condemning the insurrections and Republican politicians that have supported them.
"It's a sickening and heartbreaking sight. This is how election results are disputed in a banana republic–not our democratic republic," he said in a statement on January 6. "I am appalled by the reckless behavior of some political leaders since the election." -

Donald Trump was conspicuously missing from the memorial services attended by former presidents marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people on American soil - and Twitter users took note, sending "where's trump" trending Saturday.
President Joe Biden and former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton attended the main ceremony in Lower Manhattan where the World Trade Center's Twin Towers once stood, while former president George W. Bush spoke at a memorial close to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where Biden later laid a wreath before visiting the Pentagon, where 44 people died. Lee Cochran, a spokeswoman for the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, confirmed that Trump's people were given the same details about the ceremony but chose not to attend.
"He had the option to attend but decided to honor the day with different stops," Trump's spokeswoman, Liz Harrington, said.
Rather than attend the somber name-reading ceremony of those who perished, Trump posted a video and issued an aggressive statement. "For the great people of our country this is a very sad day," Trump said at the start of the video shared online. "September 11 represents great sorrow for our country."
He then turned his attention to praising his lawyer Rudy Giuliani (who was the mayor of New York on the day of the 9/11 attacks) and criticizing President Biden's troop pullout from Afghanistan.
"It is also a sad time for the way our war on those that did such harm to our country ended last week, the loss of 13 great warriors and the many more who were wounded, should never have happened," Trump said in the video. "It was caused by bad planning, incredible weakness and leaders who truly didn't understand what was happening. This is the 20th year of this war, and should have been a year of victory and honor, and strength."
Trump repeated his denigration of Biden when he spoke at the NYPD's 17th Precinct in East Midtown Saturday. The former president told the officers he was surprised the Afghanistan pullout hadn't come up in other 9/11 memorial speeches.
People on Twitter were about as divided about Trump being MIA from the main festivities as you might expect, with most Trump critics making fun of his plans later today on this day of national mourning - he's providing commentary for a pay-per-view boxing match in Hollywood, Florida.
"How America's former presidents will commemorate 9/11 President Bush- Keynote speaker at Flight 93 Memorial President Obama- Ground Zero Memorial President Biden- Memorial Services at all 3 memorial sites Trump- Ringside commentary at Boxing match," wrote one Twitter user.
While another wrote: "Trump visits a police department to air grievances. Can he just be respectful for one freaking day?"
Yet another pointed out that Trump once called New York City his home. "He literally has an apartment here."
On the flip side, Trump did receive praise for visiting the police precinct, where he took photos and shook hands with his supporters. -

"Where is Trump?" Former president notably absent from 9/11 events

Three Democratic Presidents — Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Joe Biden — were all in attendance at a 9/11 service in lower Manhattan Saturday for the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 Americans.
Meanwhile, George W. Bush, a Republican, was in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, giving a speech near the spot where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed that day after passengers overwhelmed several al Qaeda hijackers who had taken control of the plane.
Former President Donald Trump, however, was nowhere to be seen at any of these memorials Saturday. "Where's Trump on 9/11?" a New York Times headline read. "Not at Ground Zero."
"Former President Trump — absent from the 20th anniversary 9/11 ceremony in his own city," McClatchy politics writer Dave Catanese tweeted.
"He had the option to attend but decided to honor the day with different stops," his spokeswoman Liz Harrington said.
Instead, he released a video statement praising New York City's "brave" first responders — while also blasting Biden's decision to end the 20-year war in Afghanistan, which started shortly after 9/11. Later, he traveled several blocks from his Trump Tower home to make a surprise appearance at a fire station and police precinct.
He used the photo-op to again criticize Biden for his handling of Afghanistan, and hint at his 2024 ambitions.

He told the first responders his re-election plan "was an easy decision that would make them happy," according to the Associated Press, while also joking with officers, "If I catch COVID it's because of you."
Trump's absence at any organized 9/11 events was not lost on his many critics, who blasted the former commander-in-chief for skipping the somber ceremonies that have become a hallmark of post-presidential life for every other former resident of the White House.
"Trump feels strongly about Robert E Lee but skips out on conventional patriotism," Vox co-founder and Senior Fellow at the Niskanen Center Matthew Yglesias tweeted.
"Where is Trump? Where he has always been in the moments adult leadership has been needed: nonexistent," author John Pavlovitz added.
"He literally has an apartment here," Daily Beast editor Molly Joing-Fast wrote.
Following his surprise FDNY/NYPD photo-op, Trump will travel to Florida to host a primetime boxing match with "no holds barred commentary" alongside his son, Donald Trump Jr. Evander Holyfield and Vitor Belfort are slated for the main card. -
