Chinas system affords the ruling class a high degree of control and cohesion, but it's very brittle.
The leadership are very careful about military adventurism because there's a real possibility they could lose legitimacy if they lose a conflict. They'll have a skirmish in the mountains with India and cover up how many died, and they'll posture against Taiwan, but the risk of doing something substantial like invading Afghanistan are far too high.

Maybe China fought human wave tactics in the 1960s because either they had no feedback on what was going on, or their generals just didn't give a fuck as they were hopped up on "muh chosen people" ideology.
Either way they had a birth rate - and thus way more young people - than they expected to be sustainable.
Either way it's well past time to hold the people who thought they were genetically and spiritually chosen above everyone else accountable.
