   the reason the US started doing airlifts off the embassy roof is because they lost control of the roads between the embassy and the airport, even though it's only like a 10 minute drive - flights were still going, it was just deemed unsafe to send people there.
   
   now flights are halted and the airport's locked down because apparently the Taliban are retaking it

    i think i read that they had some artillery or mortar fire on the runway earlier but those had ceased.
    
    why attack the airport now while they are negotiating at the presidential palace.

    maybe? I read earlier that 2x B2s were bombing a military airbase so that the Taliban couldn't get their hands on the hardware there but I'd doubt they'd be able to get away with hitting the country's biggest civilian airport
