I just think they shouldn't be factory farmed.

The relationship between man and livestock should be that of a shepherd and his flock. The sheep get to live a life of safety and plenty due to the care of the diligent shepherd. They are not devoured by wolves and they are led to green pastures to live their best lives as sheep. In return, the shepherd shears them every season and in the end they provide him with meat, to sell or to eat. This, rather than brutal evisceration by wild animals that they would face without the shepherd.

The animals should not suffer. They should be taken care of and allowed to express their nature as animals.

But we can still eat them. It should just be a relationship of mutual benefit.

Basically this exact same argument was deployed often in the antebellum period in the US to defend slavery.

There is no higher moral obligation than giving your life and being to other organisms so they can strive. I personally can't wait for the day I get consumed and become one with gaia again. It will not happen on my terms and I have barely any influence on when it happens. It definitely will, though.

Isn't it also exactly the same argument woke capitalists use to defend their exploitation of labor?

"Look at how actualised these workers are! We even give them free pizza and craft beer on Tuesdays and Fridays!"

That depends on your stance regarding meat/slaves and morality.

Yup, it really is. The artifices of man are but myriad ways of making it appear as if we do something noble by robbing those with less power. This is why they murdered Socrates.
