I was at a funeral today.

It was a very Catholic affair. One of my gf's family members died. And they're all very Catholic. There was a priest, and there were hymns, and there was holy water, and a lot of prayers, and even the thing the priest swings around that burns the sage and stuff. For a funeral it was pretty cool. Kind of felt like a mob funeral, 10 limousine procession with the hearse at the front, everyone in all black, dressed to the nines. Biggest church in town, it wasn't a Cathedral, it was the kind just below that, a Basilica i think they're called.

Catholics don't mess around with this kind of stuff. Sitting there looking at the beautiful stained glass, listening to the hymns and the calm voice of the priest, i kind of get the appeal of this whole Catholic thing.

Perhaps i should get baptized so i can partake of the body of THE LORD, Jesus. What's it called like church provinces? Bishoprics? The diocese? I'm sure they'll be thrilled to have a convert. Besides as a certified pedo, i'll fit right in.

Jokes aside, it was kinda nice actually. Never thought i'd say that, but then again i never thought ten years ago i'd have an open mind to matters of spirituality, theology and in particular Christian philosophy. Learning about thsoe last two, on my own, purely out of interest, definitely made me appreciate Christianity, and i decided fuck being a fedora wearing atheist, i'll be a little open minded and at the very least go agnostic. IDK. Wouldn't it be nice if God were real? I think it would... Perhaps i should Pascal's Wager this thing we call life. Who knows, God knows i suppose...

If it was confirmed the Christian God is real and everything in the Bible was true, I would be probably be absolutely horrified, and not because I think I would go to hell, just because I would have proof that not only is God real, he is also really really, really, fucked in the head.

You're not supposed to take the bible literally fam. The fundamentalists got it wrong. I'll even give you a theological argument for that. Canon law says the bible was written by the apostles who were divinely inspired by The Holy Spirit. However even in being in such a state of grace a man is still a man and only God is perfect, so man's works are not a perfect representation of the True Word of God. And that's fine because God makes allowance for a state of imperfection through free will, sin, repentance and atonement.

Remember that The Bible itself is not a miracle. And i mean that in the Canonical technical understanding of what a miracle is.

Without doing a bible study but getting onto a more philosophical interpretation let's just say that when it says that God made us in His image He did not just make us to look like Him. And the way i look at it is that if God should be real than He is a very human like figure not just in body but in mind as well, whether this is a good or bad thing i do not know, but the authors of the bible certainly seemed to consider some aspects of being like God to be not desirable at least in us as we exist on this mortal realm. it even makes it clear in the Bible when Adam and Eve gain the knowledge of Good and Evil.

Lol I know plenty of it isn't meant to be taken literally, I was just sort of adding that in to help express my point, which still stands. If John 3:16 was the only confirmed "true" verse in the Bible I would still feel the same.

Well Jesus was a real historical figure. How do you feel now? Also what is 'true', the thing that should be true is the lesson that is learned from the story, granted you have the understanding that the bible is a collection stories, with lessons. And not lessons like 'you'll burn for eternity if you don't get magic water dropped on your head as a baby'.

That's just silly. The people that wrote the bible and studied it for the last 2000 years weren't silly people. They also weren't dumb, and there is a very deep level of analysis to be had in these stories. Even from a non theistic perspective.

I think we're on 2 different pages here man. My entire point is that if God is real, he/she/it is really fucked up. That's all.

Actually. I don't doubt it. But since i am more learned in Christianity than most Christians are, i'll stick with that before i get into Daosim or some such. Also, Christianity is culturally compatible with the kind of society i want to to live in, so there is that.

I was at a funeral a few weeks ago that was also in a catholic church. The church was on a native reserve and had no power or water because it was in disuse due to COVID or something. It was packed and a bunch of people were outside, some of which because they didn't like catholicism. The priest was pretty lame tbh, he didn't speak any truths or insight and just talked about choices when the funeral was for a murder victim. There were people from all walks of life and I sat near a regional (at least) celebrity who was quite choked up. I was overcome with anger the whole time. Security blocked off streets in every direction and people had to walk up from quite a ways. When the body was carried out and the drumming hit (after the moving and uniting eulogy) everyone got pretty choked up and took turns touching the casket. After a certain point I realized I wasn't going to feel any better so I left, ran into someone I knew who didn't attend the funeral and we smoked a joint at a gas station while I was wearing a black suit and he was dressed like a bum and driving a 4 wheeler.

Tl dr the priest sucked but it was a decently respectful and somber send off for someone who was one of the good guys in a world full of bad

If you didn't attend the wake afterwards, you most definitely missed out on the best part of the experience.

Catholics do like their alcohol. Try for a genuine Irish Catholic wake next time.
