(Bloomberg) -- Former President Donald Trump is going to sue Facebook Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter Inc. CEO Jack Dorsey, a person familiar with the matter said, raising the stakes in his battle against social media giants who have blocked him.
The class-action lawsuits will be announced at an 11 a.m. press conference billed as an effort concerning First Amendment rights, according to the person who asked not to be identified discussing matters before they are public. Axios reported the lawsuit earlier.
Twitter permanently banned Trump in January for his role in stoking the mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol in a deadly riot to stop the counting of Electoral College votes for President Joe Biden. Facebook last month said Trump would remain suspended from its networks for at least two years, with the possibility of being reinstated in 2023 if risk to public safety has subsided.
Facebook and Twitter declined to comment on the suit.
Without access to the broad reach afforded by social media giants, Trump has struggled to maintain an online presence. He shut down his blog-like “From the Desk of Donald J. Trump,” though he frequently sends out several press statements a day -- often targeting fellow Republicans he believes are insufficiently loyal.
Trump recently stepped up his public activity by restarting rallies and making a trip to the southern U.S. border last week to criticize Biden’s immigration policies. He’s backing candidates in the 2022 midterm elections and actively opposing others. He has also held out the prospect he could run again in 2024.
The former president has been teasing that he’ll launch a new platform that can’t remove him. He said on Dave Rubin’s “Rubin Report” podcast on June 25 that “there’s a lot of platforms out there, that’s what we’re looking at, getting the right platform, a perfect platform, and I think you’ll see something fairly soon.”
During his presidency, Trump used Twitter for everything from insulting rivals to major policy announcements, and he relied on Facebook especially to raise money from small-dollar donors. -

President Donald Trump's staff were perplexed by the company he kept, author Michael Wolff said.
It led them to nickname the Oval Office 'the Star Wars bar' he told The Times of London.
The reference was to a locale in the movies beloved of outlaws and bizarre-looking aliens.
White House staffers got so used to seeing a vast retinue of unlikely figures in President Donald Trump's Oval Office that they nicknamed it the 'Star Wars bar,' according to Michael Wolff, author of a new exposé on the Trump administration.
In an interview with The Times of London published Wednesday, Wolff discussed his new book, "Landslide," which the newspaper has been publishing excerpts of.
In the interview, Wolff claims that he travelled to meet Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort despite the unflattering portrayal of the former president in his two previous books on his time as president.
There, he observed that Trump conducted business in the front lobby, surrounded by supporters and favor-seekers.
"The man can't be alone," Wolff told the publication. "The Oval Office in the Trump years was at any time filled with enormous numbers of people."
Staffers, said Wolff, nicknamed it "the Star Wars bar" because of the odd characters hanging out there.
The nickname is an allusion to the Mos Eisley Cantina in the first "Star Wars" film, where Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first meet Han Solo.
The official Star Wars website describes it as "a dimly-lit tavern known for its strong drinks, hot tunes, and occasional outbreaks of shocking violence."
Trump during his presidency took a much laxer approach than other presidents to who was allowed in his orbit.
His second chief of staff, John Kelly, at one point tried to restrict the flow of people able to access the president, but with limited success.
During the final few months of his presidency, Sidney Powell, an attorney associated with the QAnon conspiracy theory movement, pillow executive and conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell and Rudy Giuliani were frequent White House visitors as they pursued Trump's bid to overturn the election result.
Trump's spokeswoman, Liz Harrington, has denied Wolff's claims in the book, tweeting on Tuesday: "All these stories from the Michael Wolff book are not true. Wolff never asked President Trump about them, if he had, he would have refuted them. Fake News!"
Wolff responded, saying that he only included verified accounts in his book, either confirmed by Trump's aides or by multiple other sources.

The future of the GOP has nothing to do with a substantive, populist agenda. It is all about the man, Donald Trump, both positive and negative. I do something masochistic and profoundly unusual by sitting and listening to all of those Castro-esque, long, rambling speeches at his rallies. He has nothing to say on policy.
I don't think that you can say Trump was elected because of his trade policy with China. This didn't inspire people.
The whole idea of the insistence that he won the 2020 election may single-handedly revive the historical reputation of Al Gore because of the destructiveness to the country, the Republican Party and anyone who doesn't go along with it. Trump is a malignancy that threatens the survival of the GOP, and I don't see a future for the party unless he gives up his 2024 presidential ambitions. -

Man charged in attack on AP photographer, police at Capitol

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man was arrested Wednesday on charges that he assaulted an Associated Press photographer and police officers during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Alan William Byerly, 54, was armed with what appeared to be a stun gun when he charged at officers guarding the Capitol, an FBI agent wrote in an affidavit. After police apparently removed the device from his hand, Byerly continued to charge at the officers, punching or pushing at least three of them, and tried to grab an officer's baton, the agent wrote.
Officers managed to restrain Byerly, but a fellow rioter helped him escape, the FBI said. Police recovered the stun gun that he apparently wielded.
Body camera footage captured Byerly assaulting three Metropolitan Police Department officers, according to the affidavit.
Byerly also is accused of attacking an AP photographer who was wearing a helmet-style gas mask and a lanyard with Associated Press lettering.
A photo shows Byerly standing behind a group of people who pulled the photographer backward down a set of stairs leading up to the western front of the Capitol building, the affidavit says. At the bottom of the stairs, Byerly and three other people grabbed the photographer and pushed, shoved and dragged him toward the site of the original altercation, the agent wrote.
A federal magistrate in Allentown, Pennsylvania, ordered Byerly to be jailed pending a detention hearing on Monday. Court records don't list a defense attorney for him.
The charges against Byerly in a June 25 complaint include assaulting a federal officer, obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.
The AP reported last week that the fence erected around the Capitol after the insurrection is expected to be removed as early as Friday, weather permitting. The U.S. Capitol Police said the temporary fencing can be reinstalled quickly, if necessary. Building restrictions remain in effect.
Law enforcement officials have been particularly concerned about the potential for violence from right-wing extremist groups and those who believe in conspiracies and follow election-related information online. Officials have been tracking chatter online about groups of people potentially returning to Washington as part of an unfounded and baseless conspiracy theory that former President Donald Trump would be reinstated in August, two officials familiar with the matter told the AP.
Investigators have also been seeing an increased number of threats being made against lawmakers in Congress related to the Jan. 6 insurrection, the subsequent congressional investigations and the House committee to investigate the insurrection, the officials said. The officials could not discuss the ongoing investigations publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.
More than 520 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the riots in the six months since the siege. More than 100 defendants have been charged with assaulting police officers. Others have been charged in the destruction of camera equipment belonging to journalists covering the riot, including an AP video crew.
An Illinois man arrested on June 24 was the first defendant charged with assaulting a member of the news media during the riot, according to the Justice Department. Shane Jason Woods, 43, is accused of tackling a cameraman, causing him to fall and drop his camera, according to an FBI agent's affidavit.
Footage of the riot showed Byerly wearing a gray “Kutztown” beanie, a neon yellow “safety” long-sleeve shirt under a black jacket, a striped face covering and a black backpack. Byerly lives in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, which is roughly 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the city of Kutztown, the affidavit says,
A tipster who called the FBI in April identified Byerly as one of the suspects captured in riot photos. The caller said Byerly frequents a Fleetwood business where the caller works. Byerly told a friend that he was waiting to be arrested because he knew that his picture had been publicized, the caller said.
Cellphone records showed that Byerly's phone was in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, the FBI said.
