‘Assault on democracy’: Biden torches Texas voting bill
By Ben Leonard
President Joe Biden on Saturday laid into a Texas bill adding new voting restrictions, calling it “wrong and un-American.”
“In the 21st century, we should be making it easier, not harder, for every eligible voter to vote,” President Joe Biden said in his statement.
“It’s part of an assault on democracy that we’ve seen far too often this year—and often disproportionately targeting Black and Brown Americans,” Biden said in a statement. “It’s wrong and un-American. In the 21st century, we should be making it easier, not harder, for every eligible voter to vote.”
Texas is the latest in a flurry of states that have seen Republicans push for more restrictive voting laws, often labeled “election integrity” bills by supporters, in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s persistent and baseless claims that the November presidential election was stolen.
The proposed legislation — which passed Texas’ House earlier this month — would restrict Sunday voting, when many Black worshipers vote, bar drive-thru voting and give more access to partisan poll watchers, among other things. The Republican-controlled Senate is expected to pass the legislation, and Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has said he will sign it.
Biden has been sharply critical of Republicans’ “election integrity” legislation, particularly new Georgia voting legislation, which he called 21st-century “Jim Crow.” In his statement Saturday, Biden called for Congress to take action on the “For the People Act,” which has passed the House and would reform ballot access and campaign finance. It would also require states to have two weeks of early voting, among other things. The legislation faces long odds in the Senate amid staunch GOP opposition.
Biden also called on Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would reinstate Voting Rights Act protections that the Supreme Court took down.
“In the 21st century, we should be making it easier, not harder, for every eligible voter to vote,” Biden said in his statement Saturday. “I continue to call on all Americans, of every party and persuasion, to stand up for our democracy and protect the right to vote and the integrity of our elections.”
Abbott has touted the bill, saying it will make it "easier to vote and harder to cheat."
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) slammed Biden's statement Saturday.
“Like his ‘Neanderthal thinking’ comment on masking protocols, President Biden is wrong, overtly partisan, and increasingly out of touch with reality,” Cornyn tweeted.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has previously praised the legislation, saying it will make elections "more accessible and more secure."
Marc Elias, a prominent Democratic elections lawyer, said Saturday in a tweet that "Texas will be sued" if the bill becomes law. -

Ex-RNC Chair Blasts Republicans After They Block Jan. 6 Commission: 'Pathetic Cowards'
Jason Lemon
Michael Steele, the former chair of the Republican National Committee, condemned fellow Republicans after they successfully blocked the bipartisan January 6 commission from moving forward on Friday, calling the GOP lawmakers "pathetic cowards."
Former RNC chair Michael Steele called Republicans "pathetic cowards" for blocking the January 6 commission from moving forward on Friday.
Senate Republicans blocked the January 6 commission—which aimed to investigate the pro-Trump insurrection targeting the U.S. Capitol—from moving forward on Friday due to the legislative filibuster. Although six Republican senators voted in favor of the commission to proceed, this was not enough to reach the 60 vote threshold required to overcome the filibuster.
"Pathetic cowards," Steele tweeted on Friday, sharing a video of the Senate vote regarding the bipartisan commission.
Like a number of other prominent Republicans, Steele has long vocally opposed former President Donald Trump and his faction of the GOP. Steele served as the chair of the Republican Party from 2009 to 2011.
"This is personal for me, and those two words were just—I don't know. that was the only way I could put it," Steele told MSNBC on Saturday, explaining his frustration with fellow Republicans.
"Look at the members of my team, you know, guys that I have known and worked with over many, many years who once stood for something, once said something that meant a lot and could mean a lot to people, just buckle," Steele lamented.
The former GOP chair took aim at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, and House Minority Leader Keving McCarthy, a California Republican, for opposing the commission.
"There was no leadership there, and that's what that moment called for," Steele said.
"I kind of look at this and just say to myself, 'where do you go from here, what do you say next to the American people?' How do you now come on the other side of this vote or non-vote and say to Brian Sicknick's mother, you know, what? What do you say to her? She walked the halls of our Congress trying to get people to do the right thing, to vote to just find out why her son died," the Trump critic added.
Sicknick was a Capitol Police officer who died amid the violence of the insurrection. His mother had come to the Capitol and implored GOP lawmakers to back the bipartisan January 6 commission, but most did not listen.
"It's not at all clear what new facts or additional investigation yet another commission could actually lay on top of existing efforts by law enforcement and Congress," McConnell said during a Senate floor speech last week.
McCarthy expressed similar opposition to the commission last week as well.
"Given the political misdirections that have marred this process, given the now duplicative and potentially counterproductive nature of this effort, and given the Speaker's shortsighted scope that does not examine interrelated forms of political violence in America, I cannot support this legislation," McCarthy said.
Other prominent Republicans have been critical of the GOP effort to block the commission as well. Republican Representatives Adam Kinzinger of Illinois and Liz Cheney of Wyoming, both of whom voted to impeach Trump following the events of January 6, have been highly critical of House GOP leadership for opposing the commission, as have other GOP lawmakers.
Former New Jersey Governor Thomas Kean, a Republican who chaired the bipartisan 9/11 commission, criticized the GOP decision as well.
"I'm sad. It looks to me right now like the American people might never find out the truth. And we need to know the truth," Kean told PBS NewsHour on Friday. -

Mitch McConnell Dubbed 'Spineless McWorm' On NY Daily News Cover – Twitterverse Goes Buggy
Diane Haithman
Mitch McConnell may find it hard to wiggle out of this one: the New York Daily News has dubbed the Senate Minority Leader "Spineless McWorm" on the cover of its Saturday edition for blocking attempts to form a bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6th insurrection at the Capitol. Nearly 5 months later, 500 people have been charged in the violent attacks as pro-Trump rioters descended to disrupt certification of the 2020 presidential election.
"Mitch and His GOP Cowards KO Riot Probe," the Daily News cover caption read that appeared with a creepy graphic of McConnell's head attached to the body of what appears to be an earthworm emerging from the dirt, which the Daily News posted on Twitter.
The post and pic immediately wormed their way into the hearts of gleeful Tweeters as McConnell quickly became one of Saturday's trending topics. This responder suggests that McConnell may find safety from haters among his co-earthworms (lumbricus terrestris in your crossword puzzle), although another tweeter called the comparison an "affront to worms":
Other comments are predictably less empathetic. One Tomi T. Ahonen suggests that WORM is not only the name of a creature who crawls out onto the sidewalk on rainy days but actually stands for "White Old Republican Male":
This responder felt the urge to not only repeat McConnell's newest nickname but added on for former President Donald Trump, calling him a "malfunctioning android."
The Daily News is no stranger to coming up with animal-inspired nicknames for McConnell, having also called him "Chicken Kiev" for refusing to allow witnesses to testify in the Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump over alleged Ukraine misconduct. And various sources have compared McConnell's visage to that of a turtle, with the Change.org website demanding that the politician provide proof that he is not, in fact, part of the turtle family.

Family of fallen Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick slams GOP lawmakers who blocked Jan. 6 commission as 'not backing the blue'
insider@insider.com (John L. Dorman)
Brian Sicknick's family expressed disappointment with Senate GOP opposition to a Jan. 6 commission.
"Clearly, they're not backing the blue ... This cannot happen again," Sandra Garza told CNN.
Officer Sicknick suffered two strokes and passed away on Jan. 7, a day after the riot.
The family of fallen Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick expressed disappointment at Senate Republicans who on Friday blocked a bill from advancing that would have created a commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection.
During a CNN interview with anchor Jake Tapper, Brian's mother, Gladys Sicknick, and his partner Sandra Garza said that after meeting with several GOP senators on Thursday, they held out hope that they could convince senators who were opposed to the commission to change their minds.
Gladys Sicknick said that the eventual outcome wasn't totally shocking to her.
"They went through their motions, but you can tell that underneath they were being nice to us," Gladys Sicknick told Tapper of her meetings on Thursday. "If they had a child that was hurt or killed on a day like that, they would think very differently. One of the congressmen could have been killed. Apparently, they think ... 'Well we're safe because of the men in blue.'"
Officer Sicknick suffered two strokes and passed away on January 7, a day after fighting back rioters at the Capitol. The Washington, DC, chief medical examiner ruled that he died of natural causes.
Garza said that the pro-law enforcement rhetoric from opponents of the commission are "all talk and no action."
"It speaks volumes to how they really feel, not only about the events of that day, but speaking volumes to their constituents and how much they really care," she said. "It's not just our pleas about how we felt about Brian and his brothers and sisters and blue, but also the safety of them and everyone else that was in the Capitol that day.
She added: "Clearly, they're not backing the blue ... This cannot happen again. It cannot. For them to vote no, it's not protecting law enforcement, and more importantly, it's not protecting our democracy."
Gladys Sicknick, Garza, Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn, and DC Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone on Thursday met with over a dozen Republican senators after initially requesting meetings with all 50 GOP senators.
"They were very charming, they knew what they were doing, they knew how to talk to us, but we kind of held back," Gladys Sicknick said. "It was just ... it was tense."
A motion to invoke cloture and advance the bill was defeated in a 54-35 vote, receiving the support of all present Democrats and six Republicans but failing to meet the 60-vote threshold to overcome a legislative filibuster.
Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, and Rob Portman of Ohio were the only Republicans to vote in favor of moving to debate on the bill.
Gladys Sicknick expressed hope that some of the GOP senators shifted their position because of their meetings.
"Maybe we changed their minds," she said. "That would be great."
Garza said many of the Republicans said they would reject the commission because it would be "partisan," despite the legislation calling for an evenly split committee, with five members selected by congressional Democratic leaders and the other five members picked by GOP leaders.
"Well you know, that's baloney," she said. "I think they just don't want to do the right thing. I think what you're seeing is elitism at its finest."
Still, Garza appeared upbeat about lawmakers continuing to push for answers to January 6.
"I'm hopeful at least they'll be able to reflect on some of what we said as the days go on, and they'll be able to start to get the ball rolling now."
Gladys Sicknick, in seeking answers for her son, reflected on his valiance that day.
"I said this morning, I said I can't believe I have a child that's going to be in the history books for all the wrong reasons," she said. "Because he was such a good person, and he was so good at his job. And he was texting all his buddies to see if they were ok on that day, while he was fighting for four-plus hours without any help." -

Opinion: The Republican Party is building a political bomb
Opinion by Frida Ghitis
Today's Republican Party is building a political bomb -- and the ingredients for the explosive concoction are being mixed before our eyes. When it all blows up -- and it will, unless the party changes course soon -- the result will be not just rhetorical extremism but could well include real violence.
If you thought the events of Jan. 6 were shocking, what comes next could be far worse.
A chilling new poll by PRRI, the Public Religion Research Institute, found that nearly one in four Republicans (that's tens of millions of people) believe the QAnon mythology that "the government, media, and financial worlds in the US are controlled by a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles." You might just shake your head and laugh at this nonsense, except that that they also believe that "because things have gotten so far off track, true American patriots may have to resort to violence in order to save our country."
This is no fringe cult. The number of people believing these and other outlandish QAnon conspiracies is enormous. There is a current of poison circulating in American society, threatening its cohesiveness and its social and political order. "If it were a religion," according to PRRI founder Robby Jones, "it would be as big as all white evangelicals Protestants, or all white mainline Protestants."
Poll after poll has also found that a majority of Republicans, 61% according to the latest from Reuters/Ipsos, believe the election was stolen from former President Donald Trump.
Inspiring these legions to keep their weapons handy for political purposes are the likes of Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who has taken to campaigning with that other GOP "luminary," Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. During a joint appearance with Greene in Georgia on Thursday, Gaetz declared that the Second Amendment is "not about hunting." Instead, he said, it's about "the ability to maintain an armed rebellion against the government if that becomes necessary."
Then there's Greene, whose deranged comments about jedis and space lasers, and her offensive suggestion of an equivalence between mask wearing requirements to protect against coronavirus and the targeting of jedis in the Holocaust, drew much attention -- along with the rarest rebuke from some GOP leaders. Greene first emerged as a fringe candidate, a QAnon supporter, dismissed by Republican leaders. But when Trump extolled her as a "future Republican star," many party leaders became hesitant to criticize her.
Her Holocaust comments finally forced their hand. But perhaps more pernicious is what she said from that stage on Thursday. "You know, Nazis were the National Socialist Party," she explained, "just like the Democrats are now a national socialist party."
So, let's take a step back and look at how this bomb construction is going. Countless Republican leaders either spread or refuse to deny the Big Lie, the claim that the election was stolen. Tens of millions of Republicans erroneously believe Trump won. Almost one-quarter of Republicans believe it may become necessary to use violence to "save the country." Then they are told by Republican outrage peddlers that the US Constitution protects their right to own firearms for the purpose of rising up against the government. And then -- the match to start lighting the fuse -- they are told that Democrats are similar to Nazis.
If that's not the recipe for disaster -- not just for Republicans but for the entire country -- tell me what it is.
As Republicans pave the way for another insurrection, this one potentially much better attended than the Jan. 6 disaster, the leaders of the party, the "grownups," have abandoned their responsibility to the country, focusing instead on winning the next election. America may blow up, but at least they'll try to eke out a majority in Congress -- even if it means blocking an investigation of the Jan. 6 assault on the US Capitol by enraged Trump supporters.
A smattering of principled Republicans are speaking out. Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska fulminated against the GOP leadership and against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's personal push to block the commission, calling it "a decision for the short-term political gain," ignoring the imperative to defend principles of democracy -- including a peaceful transition of power. "I kind of want that to endure beyond just one election," she said grimly.
Some may view these maneuvers about the Jan. 6 commission, the reluctance to declare the legitimacy of the election and the implications of the increasingly extreme rhetoric as just a sign of a more polarized political system. This thinking fails to grasp the seriousness of what is building. And unless GOP leaders wake up to the danger, the US may soon face something far more dangerous than over-the-top rhetoric and a disputed election. -

even just on the face of it you're comparing an incident that killed thousands to one where five died (most due to underlying health issues), where the two groups charged with organising the riot/protest were led by explicit FBI assets, and who the police actually allowed into the building.
