2016-07-13 at 3:58 AM UTCSerious post, more lighthearted one later:
I was considering making a thread about it. It was brought up in r/ancap:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Anarcho_Capitalism/comments/4s302a/pokemon_go_vs_michelle_obama
The post I made there:It reminds me of an idea I had. Wearing a VR headset in plublic with passthrough mode or an augmented reality program and a shirt with this on it:
Accepted that reality is never going to be what you want it to?
…
Why not replace it?
Relate it to capitalism/consumerism and competition between available choices. The outside world just isn't that interesting, novel, stimulating, entertaining, as the alternatives; film, games, computers, internet etc.
I really can't see any logical arguments this, most will be based on fear, a pessimism bias and others leading to an inaccurate/unlikely prediction of what it will lead to, fear of change, appeal to nature, being set in their ways and memory biases etc. This has a far better chance of being far more effective than any amount of idealism can produce.
Another thought I had years ago, just for amusement: What if…you could use an augmented reality device like Google Glass to replace people with simple colored sticks. This could be a good solution for misanthropes and anxiety sufferers.

2016-07-13 at 4:38 AM UTCAlso, Nintendo's shares have risen 60% since the release: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.economist.com%2Fnews%2Fbusiness-and-finance%2F21702087-nintendo-shares-rocket-after-its-successful-foray-smartphone-gaming-pok-mon-go-shows&oq=cache%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.economist.com%2Fnews%2Fbusiness-and-finance%2F21702087-nintendo-shares-rocket-after-its-successful-foray-smartphone-gaming-pok-mon-go-shows&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i58.8205j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
I read that they may have originally intended to use this to draw people toward their main line of products, but are now, or should be, scrambling like ____. Actually, it wasn't even designed by them, Nintendo or The Pokemon Company, but by Niantic. If they want to keep it from being more than just a passing a fad they need to rapidly and regular begin to integrate key features, mainly ones that make it more similar to the original game. Primarily, and most obviously, being able to battle other people, having the traditional system of leveling, moves, and stats. In fact, the game has become the fastest game to top the App Store and the Google Play, beating Clash Royale.[32] As of July 11, 2016, Pokémon Go has an estimated 7.5 million downloads in the United States.[33] It was installed on more than 5% of Android devices in the US, according to SimilarWeb
By July 12, 2016, the average daily usage of the app on Android devices exceeded Snapchat, Tinder, Instagram, and Facebook.[41]
Some of the real-life situations that have been pretty entertaining and heartwarming. https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemongo/top/
It's happening, I predicted it years ago since Oculus Rift was first announced. There are so many possibilities, not just for providing simple entertainment, but change, the potential for significant, and incremental, positive social change. It's a nice thing to spend some time thinking about, imagining. -
2016-07-13 at 4:50 AM UTCI play this all the time while hitch hiking. I love it.

2016-07-13 at 2:47 PM UTCDoes it need wifi all the time to work? If so this will be the biggest blunder of the century.

Most phone plans have some sort of 4G/2G bullshit for being on the go. -

And it’s not like Pokémon Go itself doesn’t already have a direct(-ish) line to the CIA. After all, Pokémon Go was created by Niantic, which was formed by John Hanke.
Now, Hanke also just so happened to help found Keyhole. What does Keyhole do, you ask? I’d tell you to go to Keyhole’s website—but you can’t. It just takes you straight to Google Earth. That’s because Keyhole was acquired by Google back in 2004.Before that, though, Keyhole received funding from a firm called In-Q-Tel, a government-controlled venture capital firm that invests in companies that will help beef up Big Brother’s tool belt. What’s more, the funds In-Q-Tel gave Keyhole mostly came fromthe National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency(NGA), whose primary mission is “collecting, analyzing, and distributinggeospatial intelligence.†-
