How long is too long of a commute?

When talking about “real” jobs, how long is too long of a commute? What kind of job offer would it take to make a longer commute worth it?

Current job is about a 24 minute commute. Great job, still have potential to grow (though the rungs are fewer and farther apart).

Interviewing for a job that is about a 43 minute commute. Also seems like a great job with potential to grow.

What would the other job need to offer me in order to make it worth increasing the one-way commute from 24 minutes to 43 minutes

If you have a decent car, decent roads, and some podcasts as entertainment then it makes the trip seem much shorter. 43 minutes is not really a long commute by modern standards. Even if you live in the city just dealing with traffic can take that long.

Depends on more than just the time, when I walked to work it was a way to get exercise and listen to music and generally was pretty pleasant. Took a little over a half hour but it didn’t feel wasted. Also had a bus commute for a while where I could almost always get a seat and read and I actually started looking forward to that time after a while. Has other bus/train commutes where I couldn’t read, even though they were shorter they sucked dick.

Current job is work from home and I’m not sure if anything is going to coax me back into the office at this point. Part of that is just there’s not much local work so I kinda have to be remote, but also it’s pretty sweet.

So IDK, think it’s one of those “depends on you and what you want” kind of things. I guess one way to look at it is that an extra half hour is about 1/8th of the time it takes you to make a living so if the pay isn’t at least that much better you’ll effectively be earning less per hour, but that’s definitely not everything

All great points. I went remote for about 13 months with the pandemic and just recently started going back to the office the majority of the time. It’ll probably become mandatory this summer.

One detail I omitted is that a longer commute means more time away from home in the mornings and evenings. If it were just me, I’d be fine with that, but it’s not just me. I’ll leave it at that.

I also interviewed with a recruiter the same day as the other one for a job that is open to being remote. That one would be pretty baller, so I need to follow up with them.

I like the point about earnings per hour with commute time built in. That could be a salary negotiation point if it gets to that. The recruiter revealed that the target salary would be about what I make now, though the bonus and long term incentives would be better.

    Decisions.

Had an interview with the recruiter last week and the hiring manager yesterday. Both went well and they want to move forward with the process, which includes three more interviews and a case study.

I’ve decided I’m going to pull out of the running and stay where I am. I’ll let them know of my intentions so I don’t waste their or my time.
