H-hyphens? I use them where I should probably use brackets or semicolons because I'm not confident in my grasp of semicolon technology.
Also, I generally wouldn't use hyphens for terms like "self control" and "self aware". Dunno why. Stylistically I think it looks better, correct or not. I try to avoid prescriptivism though, especially where harmless linguistic idiosyncrasies are concerned. Besides, using hyphens for that purpose is a lexical coward's easy way out. If you want "self" to be a prefix, write it as "selfaware". You won't though. Cowards.
