Can I plug my computers directly into each other with an ethernet cable and get my files off that way?

I think he's lying. No idea why. He's not actually just wanting to transfer files. He's trying to pair both machines for an as-yet undisclosed purpose.

Best to just connect both machines to the Internet and then install RemotePC on both.

Is it really that hard to connect two PC's with an ethernet cable and spent five minutes configuring the network adapter so they can find each other?

Try using a regular cable instead.

Wont work on the devices in question (not PCs)...as they are NOT auto-negotiable...I concede however you are probably right on the PCs.

Isn't modern technology amazing. 30Jiggawatts...back in my day that kind of storage took up the whole floor of a building, now you can have that and several hundred times more in the palm of your hand!..but still no effective penis enlargement cream.

Back in the 300 baud days, it took 466 minutes just to download a 1mb file (7.7 hours). A text file alone could easily take a couple of hours to download/upload. Eventually, what we did was use a "double-barrel" setup. You'd take two 33.6 US Robotics modems and configure them to run in sync, thus achieving almost double the throughput.

I remember downloading gifs on my 1200 baud modem and blowing my load before the gif was even 60% completed.

You could double barrel those 56k modems too...I just get IDSN.
