   Because our brains are based on the risk/reward system. Basically to enable us to survive our brain rewards us with a shot of dopamine or other neurotransmitters everytime we do something that furthers our survival or that of the species. Drugs are just the cheat codes to our brains, they release those neurotransmitters and give us the pleasure without having to perform the tasks. This is why sex and drugs go hand in hand, it essentially double doses us when done together for that really kickass high. Our brains are designed to take drugs, that is literally their primary function.
