Ammo/gun prices right now are fucked, and, its pointless buying a gun if you can't buy a good amount of ammo/mags for it. You will also at minimum need a sling/ some sort of kit to keep extra ammo on you.
In your place, I would buy a shotgun for no more than $500 after tax etc. plus a sling, ammo holder (bandoleer?), and at least 300 shells. Spend the rest on beer and condoms, and punish your girls pussy. This is what I would do; your results may vary.
Obviously if I had more money to play with I would buy a good demiseason uniform that can be switched from summer/winter, boots, bulletproof vest/ helmet, mag carrier, 20 mags, lots of ammo, and a reliable assault rifle (which has a sling, light, and red dot).The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -

I honesly don't know much about shotguns; the only 2 that I have a maverick 88 and a Saiga 12. They are both shit. The Russian one is no longer available, the maverick is $200 but kind of shit tbh. You can buy a chinese version of the Saiga 12 but its not worth it; a pump action is ultimately more reliable.
I would say get a maverick 88 (~$200 + tax + whatever fees), or, if you want something nicer, get a mossberg 590 (~400-600 depending on configuration).
Don't buy a handgun; they;re harder to shoot if you have no experience. If you just need to get your foot in the door, then you should probably get a long gun. At cheaper prices, I would say a 12ga or a .22, but a 12ga will have more utility in the long run as far as how lethal it is/ what you can do with it. A .22 is good mostly for cheap practice/ hunting small game. A shotgun is good for home defense, hunting, shooting old appliances out in the woods, etc.
If you want something that is actually important, maybe look at getting a "Palmetto State Armory AR15". https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-pa-15-16-carbine-length-5-56-nato-1-7-phos-m4-classic-rifle-black2.html Keep in mind that although this rifle is better than a shotgun, you will need ammo (which is overpriced these days), as well as spare mags. Do not buy this unless you have at least 2.5k to spend. You will need shit other than the rifle to complete the set.
Honestly, if I were you, knowing that you've had some issues with drugs, etc. I would just go and try to buy the cheapest gun the local gun store has. If you fail the background check then you may be subject to a certain % restocking fee. If you can't pass the background check, then its better to pay the restocking fee on a $200 gun than have to deal with sending a gun back to the internet store which costs more, etc.
Anything is better than nothing. With any gun you can at minimum kill someone who you hate and then kill yourself afterwards; a quick exit. -
