Originally posted by blaster master Yeah, this is true, but in the last 10-20 years they've done everything they can to suck the profits out of the hands of the workers. A lot of places you'd make all your extra money on overtime that was passed off to the customer, now the market is more competitive so people will just hire a second shift and keep everyone at 35 hrs a week so there's no health insurance obligation.
For a while welding was really pimped by republican news outlets as this great career that you could make as much money as a college educated person doing. And while there was some truth in that, the media hype and change in immigration has definitely made it so the supply of people who are will to work outweighs the demand in the market. There was a window there, probably before the last recession where the supply of labor was low and there was a lot of jobs that needed people for 60-70 hrs a week and were ready to pay top dollar to have the work done. But as always, economics dictates the way things are done, and the powers of economic change drove that right out the window.
Economic globalization is going to do everything it can to not have a wage disparity where a Chinese kid is getting $10 a day for what an American man is getting $200 a day to do. And they sure aren't going to want to pay the id in China anything more than they have to. The market has forced a change and making 100k a year in a trades job is basically a thing of the past other than being a manager of a large profitable outfit or being very motivated and owning your own business.
So I can think of 10-15 people I know who have ever made more than 50k in a year welding, and I'm one of them and that year I booked 10 weeks of 60 hrs a week and the rest of the year 40-50s. I can think of 3-5 people who have made more than 80k a year doing it, two were managers at companies they had been with for eons that allowed them to book themselves crazy overtime doing office work while everyone else was on 40 hours and gave them a profit share, and the others were pipeline workers who one year will make a fortune and then the next three years can't find work other than shitty jobs for 14-16 bucks an hour
Smelly, you know what else I've done since I haven't been punching the clock? Paid all my bills and didn't mooch off my family. When's the last time you paid your own phone bill or car insurance?
Yet people aren't willing to raise minimum wage.
Wages stagnate because they can.
Min wage would be 23/h today if adjusted for inflation. Think about that for a second. You're making less with skilled labor than boomers made selling burgers or delivering newspapers. -

Originally posted by blaster master Minimum wage has doubled since I started welding. The problem is the wage ceiling, the employers feel like, oh I pay 12 bucks an hour for this retard, why would I raise the wage of the top guys?
It needs to more than double. It needs to match inflation. Most civilized countries have a law that automatically raises it every year to match inflation... Like it used to in the US before 1968. -
