It's like asking "why are so many Hollywood executive types pedos/rapists", or why so many politicians are. Sociopathic sex perverts have both the lack of scruples necessary to make it into positions of power and an incentive to do so. Protestant churches - lacking the meaningful, entrenched power structures of the capital C "Church" and its clergy - therefore attract less (but still not no) attention from those types. Especially for pedos, the Catholic church offers them a chance to have a position of trust (the utmost kind of trust), an air of moral purity, and access to children. It's an unparalleled opportunity.

I would just add that entrenched power structures that operate by reputation, partially or in full, on the perception of their moral authority will go to almost any length to protect that perception, or image if you will. The higher the institution is regarded as a moral authority the higher the chances are that if you're part of the institution as a representative, and do some fucked up shit the institution will elect to protect you no matter how heinous the crime. -
