My rig gots an ish with 35w max power to the PCIe slotty which means cant use many GPUs without doing something.
Anyways, I gots me this old evga 600b and I was considering hooking it up to my optiplex 990 sff but of course externally mounting it.
My question is, if I do all dat shit^ can me runs a higher power consuming gpu?

Right now my gpu just slides into my gosh dang blue slot and get all of its power from the mobo.
I want to be sure the mobo isn't going to still limit power to the pci slots after swapping old psu for new psu.

Does anyone have any experience with this??

I have a 2gb 730gt gpu right now but it just is not enough for some of my games I own.

All i wanna know is do i just find a nice 6gb or 8gb gpu for my optiplex and power everything with an external power supply?

Is there anything else I need to take into account?

Does pcie 2 or 3 or 4 matter?
Do i have to match up stuff like that between the gpu and my mobo?

yeah mounting the PSU externally will work but it won't increase the max amount of power to the PCIE slots, that's a function of the motherboard

I have a shitty graphics card that is designed and indeed does take all of its power from the mobo.
Do your guy's big fancy gpus do that too or will I be plugging them in directly with a wire harness from my psu?
If I am just going to be plugging my psu and gpu into each other then my 35w max mobo pcie slot wouldn't matter would it?

typically the higher-power GPUs will have slots on them to plug directly into the PSU; they don't draw all of their power from the PCIE because it'd just cause too much heat and damage

this is what I have - see how at the top there are two power connectors?

wait what I'm getting at is I'm not sure if 35W from the rail is enough to run modern GPUs, even if they do accept external power

    OK

so PCIE4 x16 is able to deliver up to 75W to a device. You want to find out what version of PCIE your motherboard has, and then see if that's compatible with the card you want to buy.

I have a gt 730 running in a sff Optiplex 990 and it is only 35w output from the mobo according to the spec sheet.
