it depends on what and how you measure effectiveness.
is it about killing civilians, destroying military targets, of just pure threat of terror against enemy country.

2021-01-29 at 12:05 AM UTCpretty much, that's why I said they're really only useful as a deterrent - modern warfare is more about controlling or destroying key points than wide-area scorched earth. Modern thermobarics can reach close to low-yield nuclear weapons and won't make the entire area unliveable for the next 30 years. Chemical weapons have lower effective area but are much more flexible in how they can deployed and what for, and under ideal circumstances can remove soldiers without damaging their equipment or infrastructure, allowing you to move in and take it hours later.

i dont believe so.
since both sides believe the other side would never resort to nukes, and or they both believe in MAD, the deterence effect of both sides on each other wpuld just end up cancelling each other so war would still happen between them albeit nuke-less and more bloody.
the US had nukes and they had a hard time getting them up and into the korea and china during the korean war. or the vietnameses. maybe it was russia and their nukes, maybe its maybeline. doesnt matter. nukes deterred nothing.
nukes didnt deter the talibans, the iraqis, or even ISIS for that matter.
and nukes isnt goimg to deter the coming unrestrained war with china. -
