Every once in a while I swirl my mouse off to the upper right and the fucking browser closes down. So I tried doing it on purpose; thinking it was some weird setting to shut it down. I fucking lose several tabs of pages Im bouncing back and forth on. fucking sucks.
anyone know? it's their generic blue chrome browser.

I wish I knew how to program and tweak the quirks to be more useful.
but it is a nice thing to be a person like Linus who clearly had a young socialist mind only to probably regret it later.
yet it may have been a great market stratigy too. give out the core for free. and then when the patent runs dry anyone can profit from the OS by making their own proprietary Linux add ons and applications and games and get to sell them.
which allowed Linux to probably receive some form of residuals from those people.

I really doubt anybody whos worked on GNU birth'd systems ever regrets being a 'socialist'. Anyone who gets to the level of skill where they can create a new OS probably has learned a lot thanks to these free tools being available.

You could always try a different desktop environment.
I found KDE to be relatively intuitive and easily customisable when I last used it a few years back.
My understanding is that GNOME went way off the deep end, and only seems to be alive because Red Hat pump money into it.
IIRC you can just install kubuntu-desktop as a package, then when you restart it will appear on the drop down list.

KDE is a piece of fail-ridden AIDS. It's even worse than the new touchscreen-centric Gnome versions, and those are God-awful.
If stock Ubuntu pisses you off try Lubuntu, it's Ubuntu running under a lightweight desktop environment with a conventional Windows XP style start menu and windowed program interface.
IIRC there are weird little shortcuts on Ubuntu that do things like close apps or open new instances if you do things like making a mouse gesture on the corner of the screen, so you might want to look into that if you don't want to bother with installing a whole new DE.
Still, I can't recommend Lubuntu enough. It's design is incredibly barebones so it's gentle on RAM and there's none of this desktop dock or fullscreen app list bullshit.
