Japanese is subject object verb and the grammar is very alien to English.
Your thought structure would be completely different.
Some Japanese people claim they feel like they have awakened after learning English because of this.
Imagine how retarded a nigger's mind is because their language consists of clicks and pops.

For one subtitles are always a reinterpretation of the original dialog not a proper translation and two there is the difference in grammar.
You will never learn Japanese by watching something with subtitles.
You probably won't pick up on grammar watching subs, but it will help your vocabulary. Speaking of "reinterpretations", have you ever noticed them? Like when a subtitle doesn't quite capture the essence of what was said, and you knew that because you intuitively understood what the word meant in Japanese? Short of actually living around people who speak a language, watching media in that language is the closest thing to immersion you're going to get. At the very least you'll learn some words and phrases.

This is how I learned English. But then again, English is a simple language. The next step was to listen to music, read lyrics and sing along. Target to target definition is kind of a popular thing that's supposed to help with this. E.g. leaning new Japanese vocabulary as it would defined in a Japanese dictionary (assuming you have enough basic vocab to understand a definition of a Japanese word that's written in Japanese) instead of learning the English translation. The idea being that like if you've studied a language for a while there are probably very common words that you've seen and used enough that don't need to internally translate them to your native language, and building further vocabulary on a base in your target language helps it be less of a project of translating back to your native language and piecing it together and more of understanding "in" the target language. -
