you think driving a car when you don't need to is a status symbol?

I knew a guy who'd drive to the shops instead of walking 5 minutes down the street, he was a fat piece of shit

If you live within a few miles of work, biking and walking makes sense. It's kind of funny around here how many people drive to work to save themselves 10 minutes. Especially in the winter. Going out to start their car 20 minutes early to let it warm up and scrape their windows so they can drive 10 minutes away.

I'm not saying its lame NOT to have a vehicle, but goddamn do people become so reliant on them that youd think youd be asking them to scale Mt Everest if you ever suggested that they ride a bike for 15 minutes.

I think riding a bicycle at 30 years old is absolutely clown worthy. Maybe u live in some small town (australia ๐Ÿ™„) that grown ppl do that, but nah.

For about 10 years my mom used to drive literally 2 minutes away to her job. Like, 2 blocks. Sometimes it probably took her 45 seconds depending on the one main road she had to cross.

It was always weird to me but I guess I never really asked her. And she wasnt lazy by any means. Like shes always been in shape and even runs marathons and does all that stuff.

Maybe it's just some psychological thing or something, like the security of knowing she had a vehicle while shes at work in case she needed it. Idk still doesnt make much sense, but people get so used to routine that I think it just feels really bizarre to them to consider doing something a different way.

I think most adults feel like a car is just kinda a given. I don't know if it's just where I live but ppl just have cars, I mean since I was 16...I had a car. Super weird to act like it's normal to ride on ur bicycle to work in ur 30s.

do you live in the city?

I know in the US having a car is culturally an important thing but it's a totally unnecessary cost if you live close to work and everything you need is within walking (/bike) or train distance. I could post mandatory registration/insurance costs here if you want, it's fucking absurd. cost of living in general is, and most people would rather spend the money on holidays, overpriced wine and fancy dinners. it's mostly cat stuff, knives and electronic hardware for me
