we've depleted so many of the world's surface-level resources that if there were some sort of apocalyptic event like a meteor strike or nuclear war, industrial society would never, ever come back. as a sort of catch-22, the only way we'd be able to get to the materials required for deep extraction would be to dig so deeply into the crust that we'd need those rare materials to build or repair the hardware.
