A friend of mine lived there with his girlfriend for a year or two, beautiful place. He did mention the sale of alcohol was prohibited early on in the evening which I thought was shit.

That's how it's always been in Norway. Blue law.
Back 30 years ago it wasn't a problem. Stores weren't open past 8 generally anyways.
Bars and pubs can still serve after hours or on Sundays.
The most prohibitive thing about alcohol in Norway is the price. It's 20 USD for a 6 pack at the grocery store of shit beer. 12 USD for a beer at the pub. As a result, homebrewing is quite popular. Every once in a while there's a handful of people that go blind due to improperly made alcohol.
Alcohol is a shit drug anyways. I quit drinking. Never looked back.
