it's mostly because of online shopping, most specifically the 'megastore' type sites like Ebay and Amazog.
even if Amazog didn't get obscene government kickbacks and market interference, the difference of overheads between physical stores and online stores is huge, and the only real benefit physical stores had was convenience. now that online retailers are able to do same-day delivery, why bother?

Mine had amazing restaurants and in this one spot there was this cookie store and right next to it a tiny astronomy shop.
I used to go all the time for EB Games and at this video store I bought my Paranoia Agent DVDs.
Also Spencer's gifts was fun to explore, loved when they had sandstorm playing.
