BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CRUSADES 1. they were justified, those slave raiding moors needed to be dealt with and 2. what about Stalin? Checkmate fags.

Religion absolutely does have a positive influence on people's lives. I think the divide comes from many religious people seeming to assume that not being religious or being an atheist = godless, miserable heathen, as opposed to, person who just thinks differently than you but can still be a good person without believing in a specific deity. Ya know?
I mean it's fun to poke fun at fairytales and unfounded beliefs but at the end of the day I would never expressly dislike a person over their religious/spiritual beliefs or lack thereof. -

I genuinely wish I had a religion. It feels like a more normal mode of existence. Across history, across cultures... it's how we naturally end up.

Yeah when I made the switch from Christian to being agnostic, I had a few atheist friends that were pretty sure I was actually an atheist based on how I was talking, and I remember them telling me how lonely of a feeling it could be.
I haven't personally prescribed to being an atheist simply because I do believe that there a likely chance of a higher power of some sort, but I dont admit to have any fucking clue as to who or what it is.
It is definitely a more empty lonely feeling though since i stopped believing in Christianity, no doubt about it. Just the comfort of prayer and church and like-minded individuals goes a long way. But at the end of the day, the fakeness couldn't be tolerated anymore and that comfort had to be sacrificed.
