Nah...they use vegetable oil..before I left the UK Huddersfield was one of the only places within 100 miles of manchester still using good old animal fat.
Middlesbrough have good chips too, they like to batter everything though...battered fishcakes (which already are breaded anyway) battered saveloy sausages etc
ETA: I had my saveloy battered a few times by a chick in middlesbrough I used to date -

I preferred Plaice.
Another thing I missed here in the US till I figured out years later they call Plaice Flounder here...doesn't taste the same though...I guess it's missing that North Sea oil ingredient here
ETA:
Hooters over here used to do a Grouper sandwich which was great, they got cheap though a few years ago and changed it to "fish sandwich"...again not the same anymore -

I remember as a young fella-me-lad the local chippy had a sign in the window one day that said "Chip muffin - 20p" I had no idea at the time what a muffin was...I was intrigued...but at the time money was tight what with only being a poor young fella me lad.
Anyway after several days of walking past said chippy I finally broke down, I had to know what this "Chip muffin" was...but not wanting to look dumb(er) I didn't ask, I just went in and ordered one...The counter was tall and being only a young fella me lad at the time I was short...so didn't see what he was wrapping.
I got outside and excitedly tore at the newspaper (as back then that's what you got your chips in) only to discover it was a fucking chip butty/roll.
40 odd years later this is still one of my life's greatest disappointments...(moreso than the 2 divorces)The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -
