Conservatives were the loyalists who opposed the American revolution, because they wanted to keep the peace and allow the British government to continue raping them like their other colonies.
Conservatives opposed abolishing slavery because they thought it would harm the agricultural industry, and lead to mass unemployment and chaos, and that blacks would rise up and overtake the government as happened during the French revolution. Besides, slavery had always existed throughout history. It was tradition. Abraham had slaves, you know. It's in the ten commandments! "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. Conservatives also opposed the minimum wage, child labor laws, 8 hour work days, and sick days. Not paid sick days, just the ability to take sick days at all and not get fired. They never had minimum wage, child labor laws, 8 hour work days, or sick days before, so why start now? Let's keep things the way they were, and conserve the traditional way of the world.
Conservatives opposed social security, which is now probably the most popular social welfare program in America. Most Americans don't even think of it as welfare, but it is. It's right there in the bill. You should look it up some time. Conservatives on the other hand called it, "the first step of the imprisonment of the American people" because they saw it as the government getting involved where they shouldn't and taking our money. Which is fine I guess if you don't want your retired grandma to live comfortably.
Conservatives opposed segregation as well. Conservatives opposed a woman's right to have an abortion. Now they're opposing police reform.
Whigs, Unionists, Democrats, and modern Liberals all have something in common: They are the progressives. Without them Americans would have no America, no equality, and no security in old age and sickness. -
