we have already covered this, we can append the thermometer record to fill in that blank, i posted the updated graph in my reply to netstat.

Originally posted by netstat The gist of the article is "let's take a few estimates of historical temperatures most of which end around 1900 and use them to build a dubious and obviously non-peer reviewed model of historical warming/cooling trends, then compare it to the current warming trend up to 2005 to see if it's anomalous"

Even if we give full credit to the model and pretend that taking only three historical temperature extrapolations - all of which the author admits show different things

It does not show different things, all of them confirm the little ice age, the medieval warming period, the roman warming period and so on, and all of them confirm the MWP was definitely warmer than today despite the lack of fossil fuels.

But the point you bring up about the article being 10 years outdated is valid, it should be updated with the latest data. the author did say next decade which is this one so we will see what happens.

however, i notice you are no longer arguing that todays warmth is unprecedented but rather the rate of the warming. i am looking at the GISP data and the previous warming period began at year 794 and peaked at 1035 at -30.4628, thats a 1.7248 degree increase in 241 years.

The roman warming period began in 273 BC and peaked at 68 AD, so 341 years and 1.198 degree increase.
minoan warming period, began in 1534 BC peaked at 1297 BC, thats 237 years and a whopping 1.8312 degree increase.

so 2 out of the 3 past warming periods lasted for about 240 years. our current warming period began in 1828 and there has been a 1.2c increase, that is 190 years so far. nothing unprecedented as you can see. but just because the last one lasted that long doesnt mean this one also will, it may end sooner, but no later than 2070 if the previous trends are followed.

i suspect it will end sooner because our current warming period was not supposed to happen at all, our interglacial period is longer than average. we are very lucky. even if we are responsible for this, i fail to see why its a bad thing? when an ice age hits, mass extinction, famine and misery will occur. our entire history and all our innovation will be lost forever. every year we can delay this is a blessing.

I Lived Through Collapse. America Is Already There.

I lived through the end of a civil war. Do you know what it was like for me? Quite normal. I went to work, I went out, I dated. This is what Americans don’t understand. They’re waiting to get personally punched in the face while ash falls from the sky. That’s not how it happens.

This is how it happens. Precisely what you’re feeling now. The numbing litany of bad news. The ever rising outrages. People suffering, dying, and protesting all around you, while you think about dinner.

If you’re trying to carry on while people around you die, your society is not collapsing. It’s already fallen down.

I was looking through some old photos for this article and the mix is shocking to me now. Almost offensive. There’s a burnt body in front of my office. Then I’m playing Scrabble with friends. There’s bomb smoke rising in front of the mall. Then I’m at a concert. There’s a long line for gas. Then I’m at a nightclub. This is all within two weeks.

Today I’m like, ‘did we live like this?’ But we did. I mean, I did. Was I a rich Colombo fuckboi while poorer people died? Well, yes. I wrote about it, but who cares.

The real question is, who are you? I mean, you’re reading this. You have the leisure to ponder American collapse like it’s even a question. The people really experiencing it already know.

So I’m telling you, as someone who’s been there, in similar shoes to yours; this is it. America has already collapsed. What you’re feeling is exactly how it feels. It’s Saturday and you’re thinking about food while the world is on fire. This is normal. This is life during collapse. Just read what it says on the tin:

LIFE! Now with 20% MORE DEATH!

Collapse does not mean you’re personally dying right now. It means y’all are dying right now. Death is sometimes close, sometimes far away, but always there. Usually for someone else, but someday, randomly, for you. I used to judge those herds of gazelle when the lion just eats one of them alive and everyone keeps going but, no, humans are just like that. That’s the real meaning of herd immunity. We’re immune to fundamentally giving a shit.

It honestly becomes mundane (for the privileged). As Colombo kids we used to go out, worry about money, fall in love — it all went on. We’d pop the trunk for a bomb check. Turn off our lights for the air raids. I’m not saying that we were untouched. My friend’s dad was killed, just gone with a land mine. RIP Uncle Nihal. I know people who were beaten, arrested, went into exile. But that’s not what my photostream looks like. It was mostly food and parties and normal stuff for a dumb 20-something.

If you’re waiting for a moment where you’re like ‘this is it’, I’m telling you, it never comes. Nobody comes on TV and says ‘things are officially bad’. There’s no launch party for decay. It’s just a pileup of outrages and atrocities in between friendships and weddings and perhaps an unusual amount of alcohol.

Perhaps you’re waiting for some moment when the adrenaline kicks in and you’re fighting the virus or fascism all the time, but it’s not like that. Life is not a movie, and if it was, you’re certainly not the star. You’re just an extra. If something good or bad happens to you it’ll be random and no one will care. If you’re unlucky you’re a statistic. If you’re lucky, no one notices you at all.

Collapse is just a series of ordinary days in between extraordinary bullshit, most of it happening to someone else. That’s all it is.

One day, I was at work when someone left a bomb at the bag check at NOLIMIT. It exploded, killing 17 people who were out shopping. I experienced this as the phone lines getting clogged for an hour. My wife experienced it as, well, a bomb, it was 500m from her house. 17 families experienced it as the end. And their grief goes on.

As you can see, this is not a uniform experience of chaos. For some people it destroys their bodies, others their hearts, but for most people it’s just a low level hum at the back of their minds.

What’s that buzzing sound you hear now?

Today I assume you went to work. Bad news was everywhere, clogging up your social media, your conversations. Maybe it struck close to you. I’m sorry. Somewhere in your country, a thousand people died. I’m sorry for each of them. A thousand families are grieving tonight. A thousand more join them every day. The pain doesn’t go away, it just becomes a furniture of bones, in a thousand thousand homes.

As a nation you don’t seem to mourn your dead, but their families do. Their communities do. Jesus, also, weeps. But for most people it’s just another day. You’ve run out of coffee. There’s a funny meme. This can’t be collapse, because nothing’s collapsing for me.

But that’s exactly how collapse feels. This is how I felt. This is how millions of people have felt, including many immigrants in your midst. We’re trying to tell you as loud as we can. You can get out of it, but you have to understand where you are to even turn around. This, I fear, is one (of many) things Americans do not understand. You tell yourself American collapse is impossible. Meanwhile, look around.

In the last three months America has lost more people than Sri Lanka lost in 30 years of civil war. If this isn’t collapse, then the word has no meaning. You probably still think of Sri Lanka as a shithole, though the war ended over a decade ago. Then what does that make you?

America has fallen. You need to look up, at the people you’re used to looking down on. We’re trying to tell you something. I have lived through collapse and you’re already there. Until you understand this, you only have further to fall.

False, i gave you 3 different examples from 3 different corners of the earth, all using a different method (stalactites, mercury, ice cores) and all of them confirm the warming and cooling periods we discussed.

Here is the sort of trend you consistently get out of GLOBAL reconstructions by scientists using more comprehensive data and good methodology:

Actually, the adjustments and meddling required to achieve that famous hockey stick graph is pioneered by a con artist named Michael Mcmann who recently had his case against a climate skeptic tossed out of court because he refused to disclose the nature of his meddling of the data.

"The Canadian court issued it’s final ruling in favor of the Dismissal motion that was filed in May 2019 by Dr Tim Ball's libel lawyers. Not only did the court grant Ball's application for dismissal of the nine-year, multi-million dollar lawsuit, it also took the additional step of awarding full legal costs to Ball. A detailed public statement from the world-renowned skeptical climatologist [Ball] is expected in due course. This extraordinary outcome is expected to trigger severe legal repercussions for Dr Mann in the U.S. and may prove fatal to climate science claims that modern temperatures are "unprecedented." ... Dr Mann lost his case because he refused to show in open court his R2 regression numbers (the 'working out') behind the world-famous 'hockey stick' graph."

As far as im aware, it uses one data source analyzing tree rings. this is what the IPCC used as its default template since the late 90s to push the warming scare hoax.

Up until about 200 years ago there had not been close to a TOTAL change of 1.2℃ over the previous 1800 years. In the past 200 we have seen a 1.2℃ increase.

That is what i said, since 1828 the earth has warmed by 1.2℃. Big deal, from 794-1035 it warmed 1.7℃ and from -1534 to -1297 it warmed 1.8℃ within the same amount of time.

A slow onset ice age is something we and planetary ecosystems can adapt to. Dumping trillions of tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere and triggering a temperature change not unlike what we associate with previous mass extinctions is gambling with our fate to a much greater degree.

It wont be slow onset, it will be very rapid 200 years of supercooling and then we will spend the next 100,000 years with majority of the planet covered in an ice sheet. if an advanced civilization existed in the last interglacial period, it was utterly eradicated with almost zero evidence of it left.

CO2 is what makes our planet so green and prosperous now. you dont seem to grasp the fact that this prosperity that you were BORN into is a very rare moment that wont last long.

green matter on our planet has been on a steady increase and continues to do so, but the majority of the time the planet looks like this:

    today it looks like this

i cant stress enough how precious the period we are living in is, more CO2 and warmer temperatures is what makes canada and russia habitable. rising sea levels arent a fraction of the problem an ice age will be.

Ill respond to the entirety of your post later but wanted to quickly point out that i never said we are heading into a "new little ice age", i said we are heading into a new ACTUAL ice age.

what we call the "little ice age" is a period from around 1400-1700 where it was a degree or two colder than today, it was not an ice age in any sense of the word.

THIS is an ice age, or rather what the last one looked like

fucking scary no? 15 degrees colder than normal. the "little ice age" is an almost unnoticeable dip all the way to the right.

Then start researching the topic with a completely open mind, read the landmark papers and reports from the field of climate science or at least summaries of them by reputable scientific authorities. Do this and you will most likely find yourself agreeing with me and viewing your previous self as the retard you are.

I did exactly that when a climate skeptic challenged me to prove that current temperature is unprecedented and i found myself unable to do so. digging desperately, i found the long term historical record and could no longer reconcile the idiocy i have been brainwashed with since birth.

so here i am today, laughing at your cherry-picked data from 1880-present that you hold so dear because it revolves around a time period that you and your loved ones grew up in.

the bigger lesson to learn here is how irrelevant you (and i) are, the inconceivable amount of time and events that passed long before you or i existed and how little control of any of it we have. in less than a century we will be in the dirt and this time we spent on this planet alive will not even be a visible blip on that big chart i posted.

when you realize there is nothing special about the century you are existing in, you realize you and everyone you know isnt special either. it is a difficult concept to accept for the feeble-minded and extremely insecure. toughen the fuck up, netstat. youll feel a lot better when you do.
