I suppose it was lack of preparedness and hard work that caused a friend of mine who had recently put himself through university to have an accident at work - caused by his employer's negligence - that left him with brain damage and partial paralysis. If only he had just pulled himself up by his bootstraps harder, everything would have been okay.

So looking at that situation, I feel like unemployment is your biggest challenge. You solve that and you can start making a dent on savings and living situation. Get that sorted, work on the addiction - use the fuel of your next step (better job, through more education whether that's formal or informal) to give you something to make it worth it.
