Should I buy a german keyboard? -
2020-09-10 at 1:13 PM UTCGerman can be typed fine on a US keyboard. Various operating systems have key combinations to produce letters with umlauts, as well as the scharfes S. Do a search for whatever you are running and you'll find it easy enough.
To be honest I never really bothered. The following convention can be typed with the standard English betabet and is well understood by any native German speaker:
ä -> ae
ö -> oe
ü -> ue
ß -> ss
You'll see this used for URLs, or other situations where only ASCII characters are available.The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -

I wouldn't recommend it necessarily. You will find that a lot of the keys are switched around from the standard US layout, and it'll just cause difficulty switching between the two, which you may need to do in the unlikely event you ever leave a room and get a job.
I'd recommend using the Unix "Compose" key concept. If you are on Windows you can download an app called WinCompose:

Using this very lightweight and unintrusive application it's possible to map one of the keys on your keyboard, like one of the "Start Menu"/Windows keys, or the "Menu" button, to act like a compose key.
Using that it's simple to type weird characters.
Compose + s + s = ß
Compose + a + e = æ
Compose + " + a = ä
Compose + o + o = °
It's very intuitive. -

for umlauts and shit you can also just enter alt + [ascii code prefixed with zeroes to 4 digits] -
