Trump admits he knew coronavirus was ‘deadly’ and worse than the flu while intentionally misleading Americans

“You just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed,” Trump said in a Feb. 7 call. “And so that’s a very tricky one. That’s a very delicate one. It’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flus.”

“This is deadly stuff,” the president repeated for emphasis.

At that time, Trump was telling the nation that the virus was no worse than a seasonal flu, predicting it would soon disappear and insisting that the U.S. government had it totally under control.

Trump admitted to Woodward on March 19 that he deliberately minimized the danger. “I wanted to always play it down,” the president said. “I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic.”

the panic is always more lethal than the virus

though I get the impression he doesn't really have much of an understanding of the virus and what he thinks of it is heavily dependent on the opinion of the person he's talking to

How do you imagine Americans would have acted differently had their president not been a liar?

I think it's most important to control panic in a sitaution like this, because the outbreak itself cannot be solved or controlled on the individual level; it requires a state-level, or at the very least a community-level response. While I normally would say it's important for the population to be accurately informed, in this case the individuals would largely not be able to correctly interpret the information and would lead to aggressive (and futile) attempts at self-preservation. I think that in this case, inconsistent messaging has been the biggest problem, not necessarily its 'truthfulness'.

In the US it has been bungled on every level - Trump's response has been poor but it is by no means the only factor or cause:

    - The inconsistent messaging from medical authorities, initially claiming masks 'did not work' in an attempt to manipulate people into not hoarding them, then later making them mandatory severely undermines the public's trust

    - Insurance exploitation has made COVID death statistics completely unreliable, to the point where people who were shot, fell down stairs or died in a vehicle collision were marked as COVID deaths because they concurrently had the virus

    - Even infection rates are completely unreliable because it's been recently revealed that 90% of COVID tests have been run at an exponentially higher sensitivity than any other test - to the point where dead, deactivated viruses or even isolated genetic sequences that may or may not have even come from the virus have been triggering positives

    - State (in this case, vs. federal) -level fear-mongering driving otherwise-healthy people to wait for hours in line with the sick to be tested, to the point where some areas have reported that over half of the infections were likely contracted at the hospital

I'd actually be interested to hear from Tech whether she thinks that conveying accurate information to individuals would help or hinder the situation

Have you ever noticed that when you present people with facts that are contrary to their deepest held beliefs they always change their minds? Me neither. In fact, people seem to double down on their beliefs in the teeth of overwhelming evidence against them. The reason is related to the worldview perceived to be under threat by the conflicting data.

People aren’t as dump as trump thinks they are. The truth and encouragement of doing this together as a country would have went a long way. He could have locked up the election had he handled this well. It’s obvious the truth won’t induce panic if handled correctly, almost every other country did it. These health officials are trained in ways to reduce panic, yet get the job done. Dr Fauci had the public’s attention and trust till trump silenced him, and now we know why. I knew it all along, how could people trust this man? I believe he has sunk himself now

Oh wait, trump admits there is systemic racism in the US. Nooooo, say it isn’t so. I guess all his ball lickers better get in line with his beliefs.

ur beliefs come from watching the news, the tainted news put in place to make it seem trump is bad and make a scene diverting the public's attention away from the real issues at hand.

YOU ARE A FOOL AND UR GOVERNMENT KNOWS IT,,,,, WE KNOW IT ALSO,, DON'T FEEL BAD WE ALL HAVE FAMILY AND FRIENDS THAT ARE JUST AS BLIND AS YOU,, ONE DAY YOU WILL SEE THE LIGHT.

no need to respond as ur point is moot

    Pole,
Listen to trumps very OWN WORDS. Your president. If you are a true American you would educate yourself on what your candidate has to say.
After you listen to trump’s VERY OWN WORDS, get back to me on how much he cares about any of us.

This shit is funny as fuck. The man cannot stop himself from talking about himself.

Do you realize he gave away top secret info telling Woodward that we have a better nuclear weapon than any other country, (which was backed up by the pentagon)? His very few words may have started another nuclear arms race.

Anyone who backs trump after this book is a fool. IT’S ALL ON TAPE.
