Anyone know if you actually can use a propane torch with MAPP (MAPP-type I guess, the original MAPP mixture isn't produced anymore) gas? The connector is the same, there are warnings not to do it but I've looked online and the complaint just seems to be that MAPP burns hotter so it might overheat the tip.
I want to try out MAPP because it's difficult to keep a large piece of titanium red-hot with the propane torch, but I don't want to spend another $80 or so on a torch head I probably don't need. I also don't want to blow up a MAPP canister and have to be in hospital for a week while they fish pieces of canister out of my chest cavity.

I own a combination propane/MAPP torch. All you need to do to switch is to replace the orifice. I believe the MAPP is a smaller orifice but I don't remember for sure because I haven't used it for MAPP in years as I own an oxy/acetylene torch.

when you say orifice, do you mean the connector on the top of the canister? because I know both the propane and MAPP tanks I can get from the hardware store have the same.

FYI I'm blasting titanium knife parts with a torch and quenching them in cooking oil in order to blacken them, will post pictures later

There's not a single hair out of place on my body. And yes I do have a MAPP gas tattoo and no you can not see it. Sibscribed to an Aldra tphthread

I meant to take some photos of the actual process but I forgot how hard it'd be to hold the metal in one hand and torch in the other and take photos.
In order to get a nice, dark finish you need to get the metal glowing-hot and then quench it (a few times). The problem I had was that even though this was a small knife, I couldn't get the whole thing hot enough before one end cooled down. So I heated in three zones, ie. get the top red hot, dip it, get the middle red hot, dip it, get the bottom red hot, dip it, repeat. I was afraid it'd come out uneven, but I actually like the finish - it looks like a solid dark grey until the light hits it, then it's kind of like a galaxy or clouds at night:

Oxidising in this case, I normally prefer to electrically anodize it but I don't know of any other way to get a black finish without harsh chemicals.
And yeah I'd be worried about the strength of the metal if it were part of a plane or submarine, not so much in this case. I was concerned it might warp but I don't think I got it hot enough for that

why not just use metal niggering paste ?

bluing? I can't find it anywhere and I don't think it works on titanium
on topic, windex tastes like soap
also on topic, sanding by hand is a bitch. tempted to get a sandblaster but then I need a tank to do it in
