Propane and MAPP

2020-08-24 at 5:46 AM UTCAnyone know if you actually can use a propane torch with MAPP (MAPP-type I guess, the original MAPP mixture isn't produced anymore) gas? The connector is the same, there are warnings not to do it but I've looked online and the complaint just seems to be that MAPP burns hotter so it might overheat the tip.
I want to try out MAPP because it's difficult to keep a large piece of titanium red-hot with the propane torch, but I don't want to spend another $80 or so on a torch head I probably don't need. I also don't want to blow up a MAPP canister and have to be in hospital for a week while they fish pieces of canister out of my chest cavity. -
2020-08-24 at 6:08 AM UTCI own a combination propane/MAPP torch. All you need to do to switch is to replace the orifice. I believe the MAPP is a smaller orifice but I don't remember for sure because I haven't used it for MAPP in years as I own an oxy/acetylene torch.The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire!

They continue to sell yellow canisters because the profit margin is exponentially higher. There is no noticeable difference in time for melting something between using a yellow canister and a blue propane canister.
You won't blow up a yellow canister. Theyre designed to work with anything with a compatible attachment fitting.
Buy a cheapo harbor freight torch….the big one…for like $30…hook it to a 20lb propane tank…then surround the knife in firebrick to keep the heat somewhat focused.
I use a similar method….cept with an actual furnace…to melt aluminum and copper. I just use a literal cooking pot to melt lead.

2020-08-25 at 2:01 PM UTCI meant to take some photos of the actual process but I forgot how hard it'd be to hold the metal in one hand and torch in the other and take photos.
In order to get a nice, dark finish you need to get the metal glowing-hot and then quench it (a few times). The problem I had was that even though this was a small knife, I couldn't get the whole thing hot enough before one end cooled down. So I heated in three zones, ie. get the top red hot, dip it, get the middle red hot, dip it, get the bottom red hot, dip it, repeat. I was afraid it'd come out uneven, but I actually like the finish - it looks like a solid dark grey until the light hits it, then it's kind of like a galaxy or clouds at night:

2020-08-25 at 2:31 PM UTCOxidising in this case, I normally prefer to electrically anodize it but I don't know of any other way to get a black finish without harsh chemicals.
And yeah I'd be worried about the strength of the metal if it were part of a plane or submarine, not so much in this case. I was concerned it might warp but I don't think I got it hot enough for that -

2020-09-01 at 5:57 AM UTCalso I'm planning on trying a new finish - I'll do as above to get the piece nice and black, then sand the edges raw and then electro-anodize it. If it works it should look like Tron or fucking Battlezone or something. If it doesn't work I huff the tank and burn my apartment down.

yea i thot it works on all metal.
also to heat your knife evenly just surround it with bricks or just dump it in a pile of bbq charcoals.
and sanding with wire wheels and dremel is pretty much effortless for knife sized objects. -

How about a wire wheel? I have a 6" one attached to an old furnace blower motor and mounted to my workbench. Just make sure that you get a mandrel that won't losen the threads in use. -

yeah I know, I mentioned this already, supposed to be a similar mix, burns around the same temperature. propane canisters are about $2 cheaper.

Yeah I use one in the beginning (attached to a drill press) but still need to sand by hand afterwards to get a smooth/consistent finish -

I ordered some of this off ebay to experiment with (the 'super' is supposed to be the niggliest they sell), as well as the cleanup/protector kit to experiment with.

I considered buying some copper/brass LSCF but I know I'm going to fuck up making the scales and waste the money on the material
