How do I sort out my digital photos?

   I have a lot of digital and digitised photos by now, and I'd like a photo management application that doesn't suck.
   
   iPhotos does a good job, but is Mac only, and converts your library into come closed format.
   
   Lightroom is subscription software.
   
   Google Photos doesn't seem safe to me, when google can shoah your account for no reason at any time (private company, goy).
   
   What's open, future proof, and can maintain a large photo library for me.
