I say this as someone who has been into modern vr since the very beginning, who worshipped OculusVR and followed them obsessively ... DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM OCULUS ANYMORE.
Faceberg cannot be allowed to soil VR.
The worst thing that could ever happen in the history of technology is for the metaverse and virtual reality to be a kikr operated and gated experience ran by Goddamn Facebook.

VR should be an open platform where everyone is on an equal playfield and no one holds the keys to the metaverse.

The future of vr should be where you have an HMD that works universally with any application or game.
What faceberg wants is a system where you can't even access anything unless you logged into a facebook account and they control everything that is on their store similar to PSN.
Furthermore, they want a dumbed down sterile normie friendly experience that will appeal to the masses rather than a free and limitless expanse for imagination and consciousness.

As of now the two best alternatives are PSVR and Valve Index.
Sony is currently working on an HMD that might work for both the PS5 and pc.

I bought an Oculus like a month ago.

    I still haven't used it.

To be honest, I don't even give a fuck if Zuckerberg or some other motherfucker is watching what I'm doing with my VR head set.

    Who the fuck cares?

Even if they're collecting data, they're not actually sitting there watching people while they jerk it to tentacle porn.

You're paranoid and suffer from delusions of grandeur.

    No you're just an imbecile.
Did you even listen to the podcast.
They are listening to you through the mic and the next gen hmds will have eye tracking.
The fact you can't see why this is an issue especially regarding faceberg is proof you're a delusional moron.

Also as for not using your rift, have you tried bigscreen vr it looks really awesome.

And besides just takr this at sutface level

Facebook wants to OWN the metaverse and force you to use Facebook

You're not really qualified to be having a conversation about this gadzooks.

So they can tell whatever I'm focusing on? I still don't care.

I mean, yeah, it's kind of invasive, but I don't see how it's such a pressing issue.

I've actually never even heard of big screen VR until now.

I might try it some time.

Ok, when you got the part about having to sign into Facebook just to access your own shit, I kinda started seeing your point.

But the VR hardware is hardware and can be rendered open source if anyone has the inclination and technical know how to go and fuck with it's firmware.

This is about the future of VR

They want total control and to make the metaverse a walled garden

This must be prevented at all cost

Think about the future and the other things they'll do to you when they know you'll just passively accept it.

It's not that I'm not against what they're doing.

The VR hardware itself isn't the issue. It's probably the sites and services one is accessing with their headset.

I mean, it's pretty much the whole Facebook problem. Using Facebook means your data will be collected and used. People can opt out of using Facebook.

I kind of sort of use Facebook (I never actually post anything to my "wall" or whatever it's called, but I use it to keep in touch with people that I otherwise rarely see).

But I use Facebook knowing full well that privacy is an entirely null concept on there.

I think that as long as people know what to expect, it's just not the worse thing in the world.

Someone will eventually come out with open source VR as the technology matures. Once they do, I'll make the switch.

The problem with this instance in particular is that a lot of people think the same way, that Faceberg datamining you as you use the headset 'isn't so bad', which makes the model highly profitable, which makes it the defacto standard. When it's significantly more profitable to sell a 'service' that collects your personal information the big companies will all do it and you'll be out of options except for maybe niche pro/jects/ducts like OSVR.

I hope that people willing to pay $1200 for a headset will reject the idea of having to sell their personal information in addition to the product cost, but I have very little faith in general

Just create a fake facebook account, that's what I use for my oculus and to follow groups I'm interested in. Also you don't need a facebook account right now, if you have one or plan on getting one soon you can still just use an oculus account and you can opt out of the facebook thing for 2 years...by which time a new generations of VR headsets will be around anyway.
