Are you even old enough to remember times when people had to compile their own linux kernels?

Or is Gentoo the only distro you've tried?

Anyway, it does turn out I'm too dumb to deal with a modern BIOS. back in the day you'd just say "hey boot from this usb drive, or if nothing is there boot from the hard disk". now I have to modify the boot order every time I restart. Something UEFI something... I don't get it at all.

I switched to Linux about 10 years ago and first dual booted because I didn't like it. Now I don't ever touch Windows.

Ok, alright. Generally speaking you want to limit the utilities available on your *Nix box if you're running a server, for security reasons. Unless you're min-maxing on security it doesn't really make a lot of sense to me, especially since you said you want to run everything on a shell script.

"OS" For Raspberry Pi, it boots directly into Dosbox (on top of Raspbian/linux)...so effectively you have a "Dos PC". Boots quick too, seconds rather than the min or 2 raspian etc normally takes to load up.

Dosbian is the first Raspberry Pi distro totally dedicated to the DOS world. It boots straight to Dosbox, from there, you can install whatever you want and building your retro-pc 🙂
Whether you love DOS games or you’re just fond of all the DOS retro software, this is the distro for you.

Just switch on your Raspberry Pi and in few seconds your Dos prompt will be ready to use. No configuration needed, just an old school command like based machine to enjoy!"
