The main reason why this is permitted is simple - policical polarisation and the gamification of politics prevents civic engagement with the political process. For someone like Techno, Larry or stl1 (TLS) social issues are a team sport that can be won, not problems that need carefully thought out solutions, or opportunities for reform.
