   There doesn't seem to be much information available, but I believe the Chinese embassy was closed because US authorities accused personnel there of stealing data related to work on COVID vaccines. I don't know why they opted to close the embassy instead of revoking visas for certain diplomats (considering they'll be able to simply operate out of a different embassy) though.
   
   The Chinese specifically closing the Chengdu embassy was definitely strategic; it stops US diplomats and operatives from having direct access to the Uighyrs
