Just checking to see if anyone has ever dealt with a dog with skin allergies? I’ve never had to deal with it till these last 2 dogs I’ve adopted.

Midnight and Roxy both scratch like crazy during the summer, it goes away during the winter.

I’ve taken them to get steroid shots before, but those last about 2 weeks, and I know steroids every 2 weeks can’t be good for them. I never wanted to use Benadryl, because I didn’t want them to be sleepy, but I broke down and gave them some recently. It made one of them groggy and the other was fine. They both stopped scratching for the most part. I’m giving it to them sparingly, but they’ve seemed to have acclimated to it. It doesn’t even seem to work anymore on Roxy, the one in my avi. She scratches to the point of bleeding. She has scabs in her ears, in her armpits, and the front of her chest.

Try a different food. I had a dog that feeding a salmon and rice based feed helped. It didn't cure him but he was better.

On it. I used to feed them pedigree, but I started going with the low ingredient foods and it helped a bit, but not anymore. They’re eating duck and sweet potatoes now. I gonna try the salmon and rice next time. What brand you use?

Fish oil in their dry food.
Also you can mix some raw egg in it to.
They need some Omega 3's and LOTS of it.
    It's all about food.
Also dogs can get messed up if they swim in ponds and shit.
The algae can give them a allergic reaction.
Good luck with your dogs they are both a blessing and a hardship at the same time.

Thanks Onion. I used to give them a fish oil vitamin daily, but it only seemed to work a little. I’ve got a bottle in there. I imagine they absorb it better with food as opposed to a gelcap. I was hoping the duck in their food would be greasy. Gonna try eggs🥚

They don’t swim like my old dog used to, so no worries there.

My dog had a double coat so my vet suggested keeping his coat trimmed very short so it didn't trap allergens against his skin again limited success. It's just trial and error until you find something that helps if you do. I tried benadryl and medicated shampoo but the food made the biggest difference.

I get Redford Naturals. I think it might be a brand for Pet Supplies Plus, not sure.

Ya know what?.....now that you say it, when I got my dog with an undercoat a good grooming,.....she did much better. You just reminded me. Time for a grooming. Wish I was confident enough in myself to cut her hair, but she’s skittish .

No, it’s wherever they can reach. They specifically chew on or lick their feet. Are you thinking of a heavy moisturizing shampoo?

When I was a kid we had a black Labrador, and I remember she had a problem where she had a patch at the base of her tail where the skin dried, so she'd constantly scratch and bite at it which made it worse, to the point where fur stopped growing there and she'd sometimes scratch it hard enough to bleed.

The vet gave us a medicated moisturiser, after we finished that we just used an unscented regular moisturiser from the grocery store

You put an actual moisturizer on her skin/fur? My one dog has long hair, I couldn’t find any skin😀

yeah lol, was why I asked if it was a specific spot

moisturising shampoo might help but I haven't had a dog in years so I have no idea about brands
