Yes he's a goofball who says a lot of retarded things and failed to live up to almost all of his election promises, but he was elected as an alternative to the 70 years or so (50 years I guess, considering most people see the 70s as the US' peak) of imperialism and rot and exploitation that it'd brought. The reason why the media go after him so hard is because they want to crush the idea of there being an alternative to the current system; their paymasters fight tooth and nail against any change that detracts from their power.
It's not about him personally or his policies, it's about the idea that someone outside of the 2-party uniparty could gain enough power to bring forth 'dangerous change'.
