there are many reasons to do it. just a few that i know of:
item is advertised at exorbitant amount because:
- is a placeholder for any one of several reasons (advertising, testing a page) and there is no intent to have the item moved into a salable state
- it is an advertisement or public display of an item by a manufacturer or wholesaler that is primarily sold via retailers, then the excessive price is advertised to prevent someone from adctually purchasing it.
- justification for high price to be sold to government or corporate entities that arent concerned about price. there are several 'military' suppliers that jack up prices of the items they sell to the .gov or affiliates. alternatively, the exorbitant price is advertised that high so the buyer can negotiate then the seller can pretend theyre selling the item at a good deal
- to sell to government or corporate entities that purchase excessively priced items then receive a kickback from the sale -
