Most of them I never talk to, but even the ones I like are fucking losers. Drugs, unemployment, prison, or some combination there of. I used to try and help them but now I don't even want to talk to them. I'm just on a different path and feel I'm lowering myself even trying to relate to them.

Does that make me a piece of shit? Probably.

For me its the opposite, like my parents are really well off and don't get incarcerated while I have numerous times. I guess I'm the black sheep of the family but a couple of years ago my mom asked me I would buy her weed because she's going blind and wants to leave my dad while crying on the phone and I told her fuck no. And my dad called me and was like "whats your problem, son? she was just joking"

It's not funny to me considering I went to jail a couple of times while living with them over my dad not liking I smoked weed and would wake me up with a glass of water in my face to go to the bad kids school. Fuck that.

You might be a piece of shit but you're not one just because your family says so, you're not your family. You're your own person and even if you love your family they can be super toxic.

Just reach out once in awhile and say hi and a friendly hello and then they'll feel good about it and you can go do your thing. No need to cut the relationship off entirely; that's just throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It never hurts to just send a text once in awhile and send them a quick hello and tell them you hope they're having a great day, and then just refuse and/or beg off any offers or requests or ideas they try to get you in on. After all, hate them or not, love them or not, they are your blood.

Try to be a positive influence on anyone that is going through tough times. You never know how much it might mean to that person. I know ive been through some really really shitty times in my life and it meant alot to me that my family never abandoned me. Nobody will ever care for you like your own family man. Friends dont mean shit, they come and go but your family is the only ones that will truly be related to you by blood and more than likely care the most for you

I have tried, given (not lent) them money, offered to help with education or savings, but they never improve.

Yeah, but he's saying his family are basically shitty people and don't care about him or anybody but themselves. Those kinds of people are toxic, even among family. That's why I say it's best to just be friendly and respectful with them, but at the same time, don't let them get through the door.
