When are we going to have guns that don't require gunpowder and cases?

2019-06-26 at 2:21 PM UTCIt seems to inefficient to carry around all that extra weight when we can use guns that just fire projectiles themselves with either hydraulics, pneumatics, batteries, or some other pressure device.

2019-06-26 at 2:28 PM UTCwhen we discover element zero and can use a hunk of graphite to fire nano projectiles at lethal speeds and it has no ammo and only is restricted by how much heat it generates

caseless munitions are a thing but systems need to be precisely machined and the propellant itself has to be mixed carefully or it'll burn incompletely, foul the chamber and fail to cycle (at best)
electronic weapons like lasers, railguns, coilguns etc. all have to lug around a power supply which is heavier than modern powders for energy released, components need to be kept within heat parameters and there's significant wear on parts even in ordinary use. the US Navy's railgun requires TWO nuclear reactors for the ship to be able to move/operate while charging the gun, and the rails on it need to be changed every 5-10 shots.
stored kinetic energy weapons like crossbows, slings, airguns etc. have a limit on muzzle velocity (due to compressed air not being able to release the same amount of energy as an explosive) and take a significant amount of time to cycle (which goes against modern design philosophy - a lot of small projectiles is more effective than one large one) - adding an electronic or mechanical aid adds more to the weight.
liquid air is promising; the Germans meant to use it as a substitute for petrol and also as a new type of high-pressure 'explosive' during WWII but it seems not much has been done with it since. once I have money again I plan on setting up a solar -> liquid air proof of concept system for storing and using solar energy, but it's a bitch to keep long term because it tends to eventually escape even vacuum flasks -
2019-06-26 at 4:50 PM UTCI kinda want someone to invent W40K Boltguns.

You've had that for thousands of years... Ötzi the Iceman had a bow and arrows, he's 5.300 years old, both the sling and definitely the atlatl are way older. Since then crossbows, slingshots, and spud guns have been invented, and the Austrian army had a bunch of PCP .51 cal. airguns in the 1780s, so there's plenty of options that aren't powder burners.
But I reckon you want something comparable to an assault rifle or machinegun, right? If that's the case, the problem is simply a lack of technological advancement. As it stands, DBSP is the most versatile and effective means of propulsion we have for that sort of thing, so if you want something that can deliver the same amount of energy, without being significantly heavier, messier, or more dangerous you'll have to come up with a new compound. And no, it won't work simply to use FP in bullet casings, one of the problems with BP burners was among other things the recoil, although a few black powder shooters have made some remarkable shots back in the days.

Someone "kind of" already did, it's called the Gyrojet, and it didn't really take hold. -
