2020-06-26 at 11:39 AM UTCI saw this petition online. It asks to remove qualified immunity, so officers can be civilly sued.
It makes some good points, but we can’t have every Tom, Dick, and Harry suing because a cop touched them.
Maybe a middle ground somewhere? As the tension in this country grows I spend many nights worrying about the state of our country. POC are dying at an alarming rate, people are being unjustly taken from their families. The people we call to save us injure, harm, murder, and terrify us. The police force is such an important job and yes there are good police, but we need accountability! Lawmakers your constituents need your protection!
I ask that laws be immediately passed into effect that allow police officers that cause harm to people unjustly are able to be held PERSONALLY fiscally responsible! As a tax funded entity it makes no sense to have the police department shell out money to pay for grievances caused to a taxpayer! The elderly man we all saw from Buffalo, NY clearly assaulted by police had to foot his own medical bills! When he sues and gets a pay out that will be from money HE paid into the system. This is unacceptable and allows for a buffer of accountability by police officers for their actions. Holding police officers personally fiscally responsible for their own mistakes acts as a deterrent for injuring/murdering/mistreating people. Wrongful death payouts can be anywhere from $50,000- to $5.7 million averaging over $650,000, while payouts for non fatal incidents range from $30,000-$7 million averaging $656,000 https://www.ncjrs.gov/App/Publications/abstract.aspx?ID=93452 No cop wants to have to pay out any amount and this will serve as just another’s way to deter unjust violence. While some of the bill will have to be footed by the police department I think this will do some change. Please support, and politicians please please protect your constituents. We depend on you! -
2020-06-26 at 11:42 AM UTCNo one is going to sign up to be a policeman if that happens. The quality of recruits will be even lower.
What the US needs is martial law under a level headed dictator. Liquify congress, harvard, yale, the civil service, the new york times, the state department etc etc and start again and military rule. -

Yeah, by doing that we’d basically be ripping up our constitution. Not gonna happen. Dream on. -

They have been basically pushing at the seams of the Constitution as it is to try and allow them to do whatever they want while still maintaining the image of the good guys. -

2020-06-26 at 12:31 PM UTCExperiment: I'm going to go ahead and say it's stupid before reading it, then I will come back to and give an edit remark on this post after reading Tech's post, let's begin.
Edit: It was stupid... What are you gonna do, call the police on the police? -
2020-06-26 at 12:36 PM UTCWelcome to American law, where they treat everybody like they're black.

I don’t think you read it. It’s about civil law suits. No one calls for the cops during a civil lawsuit. Unless they’re called as witnesses, of course. -
2020-06-26 at 12:42 PM UTCThe fact of the matter is that people screw up, but we can't control everything and accidents happen. They already have ways to regulate the police. Whether they work is another story.
To make cops accountable financially for any mistakes would deter Justice and ruin a already mediocre system. -

Can you imagine the burden on the civil courts when every worthless motherfucker on the planet has every fucking cop that looks in their direction in court. -

I agree with the part that there needs to be a deterrent for bad cops acting wreckless.
I’m hoping that these cops records are made public. I DO believe that will be a deterrent. -

Unlike that stalwart defender of the constitution Barack Obama. Or George W Bush. Or...
Face it the constitution hasn't been followed for quite some time now. I know politics is a kind of spectator sport for most people and you are team blue. But maybe, just maybe there's a clear pattern here, and it's not the team colours of the elected figureheads who are the problem? -

2020-06-27 at 7:50 AM UTCif the cops cant do their jobs effectively then someone else would eventually rises up and fill the vaccumm due to everyones intrinsic need for safety and security, especially small bussinesses.
castrating and emasculating the police force will only lead to the reemergence of mobs and cartels and anyone with unhindered use of violence to impose law and order.
want looters and rioters to stop looting your stores and burning your cafes ?
talk to the don.
