it's a guaranteed kill, mostly painless (your head can't survive detached from your body more than 20 seconds or so) and is terrifying.
I figure the only real reason it's not used anymore is because decapitating someone is seen as grotesque overkill, but it seems to be a lot less painful and faster than 'modern' methods like lethal injection or gas

can be horrendously painful if they don't clean the blade after each use and it fails to fully sever on the first drop.

people being hanged sometimes don't break their necks and have to suffocate for 3 minutes or whatever, which I imagine sucks profusely
lethal injections sometimes don't work on executees - either because they already have a tolerance to opioids or they're genetically unable to process them
the electric chair needs to be prepped and configured properly to quickly kill someone instead of slowly burning them to death

Hanging can still be realtively painless if the subject does not die from a broken neck. It depends on how thick the rope is and where the knot is positioned. If the noose cuts off bloodflow, not just airflow, unconsciousness will be rather swift and the sensation much like that of falling asleep.
