Buying salvage title cars on auctions

   Does your state give you a salvage title once you win the auction or do you have to fix it up before passing some state inspection to get a title/register/plates?
   
   Do you do auctions online, or in person where you can look at the car up close first?

   NC : You only get a salvage title if the work's been done, if not you get a bill of sale. They are sold as "salvage" & you have to to repair before the state issues a "salvage/rebuilt" title for plates etc.
   
   I do most of my buying online, I hire a 3rd party inspector if I have any doubts.

   To expand upon this, some states have stricter laws than others. Minnesota only requires you to send in photos of the repair for example, Wisconsin can tell you it has to get brought to Madison for an inspection, but I've never personally heard of that happening.

   Same here in WA from what I gather.
   
   So if its just missing a front bumper or has a dent then you just put a bumper and pull the dent? Do colors have to match? What about if it leaks oil or something, you have to fix this too?

   No cosmetic issues don't matter to the state(your customer likely so) as long as it passes a safety inspection/is road worthy. Check your state's safety inspection requirements, but for sure body panel color mismatches won't be a factor.
