Originally posted by street_carp Sex slavery, especially involving women and children, is happening in more countries than it isn't happening in. The consequences of noncompliance range from homelessness to death. Those people aren't living the capitalist dream.
I also feel like you're significantly understating issue of labour based slavery. It's not just people working in factories for zero or negative income. Instances of agricultural slavery are frequently bought to light across Europe, as well as people (especially young people) being forced into various slave-like arrangements in the criminal underworld, including drug running and having their property used for criminal purposes.
I won't even go into the shit that goes on in caste based social systems across the middle east and Asia. People are born into a life of prostitution or cleaning shit pipes with nothing provided in the way of payment besides a small amount of food and a corrugated tin roof over their heads. If they try and deviate from the system they're usually killed.
Yeah I'm not surprised "slavery" is used by criminals. They already break the law. It's not some widespread issue supported by governments or corporations. It doesn't make any financial sense to use slavery in a legal industry and risk your profits for cheaper labor when you can already hire kids that work for pennies willingly without being forced.
Criminals and the underworld aren't part of the economy in any real capacity so I don't see how that's at all relevant. Crime is crime and murder is illegal everywhere. The only reason people get away with it is because of failures of public safety.
I don't see how criminals and failures of the police has anything to do with the mainstream economy. If they were all evil slave masters why not kill your competitors and get your capital from robbing banks and seizing property by force. The reason people don't do that is because they would be shut down by police or military.
The only reason "slavery" goes on is because it's so rare and such a small part of crime that people can get away with doing it in very specific instances. It's not like there's some generation of enslaved people anywhere in the world today. It's a very tiny minority of crime really only common in human trafficking and sex industries which are highly scrutinized by every country and highly illegal with lots of public outrage.
It is not the norm anywhere in any capacity simply for the reason that forcing someone against their will is illegal everywhere. Even North Korea couldn't get away with something like that -

2020-06-19 at 7:14 PM UTCChina is getting away with it pretty openly right now. There's millions of people of various ethnic minorities (most notably Uighurs, Google Uighur slave labor if you want) working for little or no pay under the guise of a publicly acknowledged re-education program.
They're making products for Sony, Apple, Nike, Nintendo and others and the Chinese government is yet to be taken to task over it. -

The reason you can't point things like this out is because you lack critical thinking skills. You can't even insult me correctly without falling back to logical fallacies and expecting other people to agree with you just because they don't like me. This is the same problem with people in the third world who just can't imagine anything outside of their own bubble.
You're just salty because you know I'm right and you're stuck in a "slave like" position and can't imagine or grasp anything beyond your tiny world view. Don't blame other people or they evil boogieman corporations for your inability to pursue your own destiny.
There is no gun being held to anyone's head. If you think slavery is real than how do those people become slaves? Were they kidnapped at night from their homes and shipped like cattle? Or did they willingly sign up for the job.
You can't force anyone to do anything without violence and there is no country where murder is legal based on class or social status even in places with a caste system like India
yea but your understanding of human conditions around the world is just as deep as them with their understanding of agriculture.
about 2 inches of top soil deep.
