This thread is about the Soviet space dog named Laika. Laika was a stray dog wondering Moscow around 1955 when she was chosen by scientists to become the first living creature sent into space. Before the launch, one scientist took Laika home to play with his children.
After the launch, the Soviet government claimed that Laika died when her oxygen tank ran out on day 6. However, it wasnāt until 2002 when it was revealed that she actually died 5-7 hours after takeoff due to overheating and stress.
Sputnik 2, the spacecraft, was never designed to be retrieved. Laika was always due to die. In 1988, of the scientists involved in the mission expressed his regret for sending Laika out to die.
