They're trying to cover up that fact right now. There's the root of the whole thing and why it happened. Some idiot at the police department too lazy to do his job and pawned it all off to some retired cop and his son. Gave them the impression they had the official authority. They didn't.

Yep. Which is why it doesn't matter what he did at all. He could have literally come back from directly raping and killing a child and it would not have made any difference legally or morally because those dudes did not see him do it, and thus had no right to treat him in the way they did.
But he didn't commit any crimes so that argument falls flat anyway.

Georgia law Gives them the "authority". They didn't need the local police to give it to them.
