depends on the soil doesn't it? quicksand has clay mixed into it. the average beach sand is packed down enough it won't sink far. it's why they place sand under load bearing blocks at the base of the beam it is attached to. it's used as an aggregate in concrete mixed with cement. the silt and clay and decay matter mixed together near swamps and near deltas or along rivers is more likely to be an area of quicksand.
