They're dollar signs in the eyes of local gangs. The people they're staying with usually aren't directly involved, but it's easy to see how they'd sell out a skinny white girl to some traffickers for a few bags of rice.
It's kind of weird how we teach our kids to be vigilant and wary of people at home, but volunteering in third world countries is seen as a chance to gain some instagram followers. -
