How should the world handle its first extraterrestrial contact?

Apologies if my assumption that we haven't already is incendiary. I'm not proposing that we talk about the concept behind the X-Files, but rather to lay the foundations of an exopolitics that will inform our attempts (or predict our shortcomings) at communication and diplomacy with an intelligent species from outside our solar system.

Let's assume they are rational, to start with, unless you have something else in mind. Share what you think we'll do in global terms, what you believe we ought to do, why the poster above you is wrong and a faggot, etc.

It’s possible that it would be the safest course of action. I imagine it would depend on our leadership’s coordination whether we can carry it out successfully. It may just be a doomed response, however. If they’ve found us before we’ve found them, that is, which seems to be a popular assumption. Or should it be?

If there's a star system somewhere in the galaxy a couple thousand of light years away and they have science, which includes astronomy of course and they have been observing our planet in the same way Kepler finds exo-planets, they already know there is a biosphere here because the light of the sun passing through our atmosphere gives a very peculiar spectra. Since life produces strange levels of methane and other compounds that would show up as unusual in their readings. If they are within a hundred lightyears the spectra will show chlorofluorocarbons and other compounds that do not occur in readily in nature. They might even be able to hear our radio signals.

If they are advanced enough to send a starship to come say hello from wherever they are from we ought to be cautious and try to figure out a way to communicate with them so we know their intent. If they come in peace that's great, but a civilization that can build star ships that can travel at relativistic speeds can use that same principle to hurl relativistic kill vehicles our way should they desire to.

If they can have civilization it's not a stretch to assume they evolved to be social as well, because it takes a lot of people working together to some degree or another to make civilization work. If they are social they might just want to come have a chat and learn more about life by studying Earth life and how it works. However if they are say a machine civilization all bets are off.

However even then we'd expect them to have a deep understanding of mathematics which might be the best way of communicating with a machine civilization. Or any advanced civilization probably.

How we handle first contact would depend on the type of 'people' these potential aliens are. IDK it's a hard question to answer.
